READING, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's ice hockey team dropped a Middle Atlantic Conference contest on the road Friday evening, falling 3-1 to Alvernia University. The Knights (6-7-2, 3-6-2) received a short-handed goal from Jude Cole early in the second period, but it was not enough to overcome the Golden Wolves.
Hayden Williamson made the start in net for Arcadia and finished with 37 saves, allowing three goals. The Knights won the faceoff battle, claiming 29 of 57 draws, with Cody Matsay leading the way with a game-high 10 faceoff wins. Alvernia converted on one of five power-play opportunities, while Arcadia went 0-for-4 with the man advantage but capitalized once while short-handed.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Alvernia opened the scoring late in the first period, taking a 1-0 lead at 17:47. Following the goal, Arcadia won the ensuing faceoff but was assessed an interference penalty. Williamson made a save to keep the deficit at one, but a second Knights penalty gave the Golden Wolves a 5-on-3 advantage. Alvernia eventually converted on the power play, sending the game into the first intermission with a 2-0 score.
• Just over a minute into the second period, Arcadia again faced a 5-on-3 disadvantage. As Matsay exited the penalty box, the puck found his stick, and he set up Jude Cole for a short-handed goal. Cole's fifth goal of the season came 1:15 into the period, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
• The Golden Wolves maintained sustained pressure for the remainder of the second period, firing 23 shots on goal. Williamson stood strong throughout the frame, keeping Arcadia within one.
• The Knights pushed for an equalizer in the third period, but Alvernia sealed the game with an empty-net goal in the final minute, securing the 3-1 victory.
