Men's Volleyball Fall in Five-Set Battle with Eastern

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's volleyball team returned home Saturday afternoon for a conference matchup with Eastern University. The Knights (8-10, 2-2 MAC) dropped a hard-fought five-set match to the Eagles by scores of 25-22, 17-25, 26-24, 14-25, and 15-10.

Arcadia was led by Josh Clendening, who recorded a match-high 22 kills. Riley Kodidek and Clendening each added two service aces, while Reece Dodd anchored the defense with seven blocks. Kodidek dished out 51 assists, and Cameron Birch and Clendening paced the Knights defensively with 15 digs apiece. Arcadia finished the match hitting .219 while holding Eastern to a .183 hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET ONE: Eastern 25 – Arcadia 22

  • Tucker Curtis recorded the first kill for the Knights to give Arcadia a 2-1 lead. Josh Clendening later added a kill to tie the set at 3-3, and another kill from Curtis evened the score again at 4-4.

  • After kills from Luka Erickson and Reece Dodd, Arcadia trailed 10-8 before Eastern went on a 5-2 run to extend its advantage.

  • The Knights continued to battle back with kills from Dodd and a pair from Erickson to make it 18-16 Eastern.

  • A 3-0 Arcadia run, highlighted by a kill from Riley Kodidek and an ace from Clendening, gave the Knights a 21-20 lead. However, Eastern closed the set on a 5-1 run to take the opener, 25-22.

SET TWO: Arcadia 25 – Eastern 17

  • After falling behind early, Arcadia took control with kills from Clendening, Dodd, and Cameron Birch, along with an ace from Erickson and a block assist from Birch and Dodd to take an 11-9 lead.

  • Birch added two more kills, while Erickson chipped in another kill. An ace from Kodidek and block assists from Erickson and Clendening helped push the lead to 19-16.

  • The Knights closed the set on a 7-1 run, fueled by two kills from Dodd, a kill from Curtis, and a block from Kodidek and Dodd to secure the 25-17 victory and even the match at 1-1.

SET THREE: Eastern 26 – Arcadia 24

  • Kills from Curtis and Clendening helped tie the set at 3-3 before Arcadia used a 3-0 run with kills from Curtis and Dodd to take a 6-4 lead.

  • The Knights extended their advantage with a 4-1 run, highlighted by a kill from Clendening, a kill from Erickson, and blocks from Birch and Erickson to make it 10-7.

  • Clendening continued to lead the attack with two more kills. Dodd added a solo block and teamed with Kodidek for a block assist as the Knights tied the set at 14-14.

  • Arcadia regained a 20-19 lead with kills from Birch and Clendening, while Curtis later tied the set again at 21-21.

  • Eastern responded with a 2-0 run before Arcadia answered with three straight points behind kills from Clendening and Dodd. The Eagles, however, closed the set on a 3-0 run to win 26-24 and take a 2-1 match lead.

SET FOUR: Arcadia 25 – Eastern 14

  • The Knights dominated the fourth set, opening with an 11-1 run. Clendening recorded three kills during the stretch, while Dodd added two. Curtis and Kodidek each chipped in a kill, and the Knights added blocks from Dodd and Clendening as well as Dodd and Kodidek. Clendening also contributed an ace during the run.

  • Kills from Dodd and Kodidek, along with an ace from Kodidek, helped Arcadia extend the lead to 18-8 after answering a brief Eastern run.

  • With momentum firmly in their favor, the Knights closed out the set with two kills from Curtis and two from Dodd to secure the 25-14 victory and force a decisive fifth set.

SET FIVE: Eastern 15 – Arcadia 10

  • Eastern jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the deciding set despite kills from Erickson and Clendening.

  • After a kill from Dodd, Arcadia went on a 4-0 run to take an 8-7 lead behind kills from Erickson and Clendening.

  • Eastern answered with a 2-0 run, and despite a kill from Birch, the Eagles followed with a decisive 5-0 run to regain control.

  • Clendening added one final kill for the Knights, but Eastern secured the final point to take the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
