2015-16 Community Service

The Arcadia University Departmentof Athletics & Recreation values its relationships with local organizations, and in recent years, many Arcadia student-athletes and staff have donated their time and energy to giving back to the community. Community service projects span over the course of the entire academic year. This year the committment to community service continues.

2015-2016 Community Service Activities

August 25:
Field Hockey - Phillies Red Goes Green - 34 Student-Athletes/Staff - 5 Hour Event - 170 Total Hours
The Arcadia Field Hockey team participated in the "Philles Red Goes Green" program which consists of volunteers from local schools, volunteer organizations and environmental groups, who help with the recycling efforts by collecting recyclable plastic and aluminum bottles during the Phillies home games.

August 28:
Athletic Department - Freshman Move-In Day - 125 Student-Athletes/20 Coaches and Staff - 3 Hour Event - 435 Total Hours
Members of the Arcadia University field hockey, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball programs, coaches and staff took a break from their preseason routines to assist Arcadia's Class of 2019 move into their dorms prior to the start of the 2015-16 academic year.

September 13:
Field Hockey - Free Youth Clinic - 10 Student-Athletes/2 Staff - 3 Hour Event - 36 Total Hours
This clinic was put on by junior Laura Squicciarini as her honors project under the mentorship of head coach Erin Livingston. For grades 5-8, this clinic taught participants beginner skills and allowed them to interact with college athletes.

Baseball - Free Youth Clinic - 20 Student-Athletes/1Staff - 2.5 Hour Event - 52.5 Total Hours
The Arcadia baseball team participated in the second annual "College Day" baseball camp done with the Jackie Robinson Little League of West Philly. Current players worked with campers between the ages of 4-12.

October 4:
Softball - Breast Cancer T-Shirt Sale - 18 Student-Athletes/2 Staff - Non-Timed Event
The team designed and sold t-shirts to the Arcadia University community to promote the fight against breast cancer. A portion of each shirt sold was donated to the Avon Foundation in an attempt to help find a cure. 

October 7:
Softball - Friends of Jaclyn Adoption - 18 Student-Athletes/2 Staff - Ongoing Event - 138.5
The Arcadia softball team has team up with Friends of Jaclyn to "adopt" eight-year-old Jordyn Visalli a member of the team. Jordyn suffers from Neurofibromatosis; through this partnership the team looks to bring her laughter and joy to take her mind off of any day-to-day struggles, and in turn she will help the members of the team grow and inspire them with the resilience and positivity she exudes each day. The team has done numerous events with Jordyn throughout the academic year, including holiday pizza parties, making cards, and tye dye parties; Jordyn also threw out the ceremonial first pitch in Arcadia's home opener this season. 

October 10:
Men's Basketball - Enon Tabernacle Free Heart Screening - 18 Student-Athletes/2 Coaches - 10.5 Hour Event - 210 Total Hours
Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church partnered with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to conduct a free heart screening to youth ages 5-19. The men's basketball program was responsible for unloading the equipment and setting it up for the screening. There were over 500 youth screened for heart disease. The members of men's basketball team that met the age requirement, 12 in total, for the study were also screened. We also were responsible for breaking down the equipment, loading back up the trucks and cleaning the venue.

October 11:
Women's Lacrosse - Legs Against Arms Race - 6 Student-Athletes/1 Staff - 3.5 Hour Event - 24.5 Total Hours
The team helped marshal the 5k race that was held on campus to support veterans. With a focus on initiating a change in our social norms, specifically those that celebrate violent behavior, Legs Against Arms IX will encourage youth and adults to come together to strengthen their legs, as they send a clear message opposing violence in all forms, while honoring loved ones lost to gun violence in our community.

October 14:
Women's Lacrosse - Cupcakes for a Cause - 18 Student-Athletes/2 Staff - 2 Hour Event - 40 Total Hours
Wellness Services and the Public Health Student Society are teaming up to highlight breast cancer awareness. Stop by the chat dining area and buy a cupcake! It's a delicious way to help the cancer patients at Abington's cancer center deal with the financial burden of treatment. A nurse from Abington will once again bring her educational 3-D models and answer any question you may have.

October 20:
Athletic Department - Dome Installation - 70 Student-Athletes - 1 Hour Event - 70 Total Hours
Student-Athletes from various Arcadia sports teams aided in the installation of the dome over one of the Weiss Courts on campus. 

October 30:
SAAC - Halloween Dance - 150 Student-Athletes - 3 Staff - 2 Hour Event - 306 Total Hours
The Student Athlete Advisory Committee held a Halloween Dance to raise money for the Special Olympics. In total, the event raised $1700.

November 1-30
Men's Lacrosse - Movember - 40 Student-Athletes/3 Staff - 2 Hour Event - 86 Hours
The men's lacrosse team helped raise money and awareness for men's health. The team raised a total of $675 between the Movember Foundation and the Headstrong Foundation.

November 7:
Women's Volleyball - 8thAnnual Craig Heisey Memorial 5K/7th Annual Victoria Heisey Kids' Fun Run - 8 Student-Athletes/2 Coaches - 5 Hour Events - 50 Total Hours
Eight student-athletes combined to support the cause through handing out water to participants, course direction or running. Kayla Resh ran the 5K posting the second fastest time in her age group. Victoria Heisey, for whom the Kids’ Fun Run is in memory of, passed away from Leukemia and was a former player for Arcadia head volleyball coach Eli Porr.

November 8:
SAAC - Flag Football Tournament - 60 Student-Athletes/10 Staff - 3.5 Hour Event - 245 Total Hours
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosted a flag football tournament on campus to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The proceeds from this event will be combined with another tournament in the spring for a donation.

November 12:
Men's Lacrosse - Philabundance - 12 Student-Athletes/2 Staff - 5 Hour Event - 70 Total Hours
A dozen men's lacrosse players along with two staff members gave time to help with sorting and packing at the Philabundance Hunger Relief Center in South Philadelphia. Hundreds of volunteers are needed each week to sort and pack supplemental and emergency food items. 

November 16-December 15
SAAC - Can Drive
The Arcadia University Athletic Department, led by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has completed its holiday food drive by donating nearly 900 pounds of food to Philabundance. 

November 20:
Softball - Lakeview School Gift Card Bingo - 14 Student-Athletes - 2 Hour Event - 28 Total Hours
Over a dozen softball players lent a hand at the Lakeview School's Gift Card Bingo checking-in/registering participants, calling bingo, and assisting participants, including students of the school; the Lakeview School is a program within the New Jersey Institute for Disabilities.

November 21:
Women's Soccer - Free Youth Clinic - 25 Student-Athletes - 1.5 Hour Event - 37.5 Hours
The Arcadia University women's soccer team hosted a free youth clinic for girls ages 8-12 for Enon Youth Soccer.

November 22:
Men's and Women's Cross Country - Philadelphia Marathon - 19 Student-Athletes/2 Staff - 7 Hour Event - 147 Total Hours
The Knights arrived at 5:30 a.m. to set up water and Gatorade tables at the mile 11 water station. During the event, the teams distributed the water and Gatorade to runners. After the race, the team cleaned its site which included the division of waste between compostable waste and recycling as the race is environmentally conscious.

December 6:
Softball - Lunch with Santa at Lakeview - 13 Student-Athletes - 2 Hour Event - 26 Total Hours
The girls all helped the children create various Christmas crafts while others helped by entertaining the children with face painting. The girls' interaction with the children brought smiles and laugher to their faces.

January 18:
Baseball - MLK Day of Service Shredding Event - 35 Student-Athletes - 1 Staff - 2 Hours each - 72 Total Hours
The baseball team took part in Arcadia's annual MLK Day of Service Shredding, eWaste and Repurposing Event assisting at the shredding part of the event.

Men's Basketball - MLK Day of Service - 12 Student-Athletes - 3 Hours Each - 36 Total Hours
The MLK Day of Service is all about giving back to the community and remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and work. This Shredding, eWaste, & Repurposing Event is put in place to provide the community somewhere to donate their items that need a new home. EWaste is any type of electronic device that people would otherwise throw out that you can help to dispose of in an ethical way. There are many different organizations that the donations from the community will benefit.

March 13:
Baseball - Free Youth Camp - 34 Student-Athletes/3 Staff - 2 Hour Event - 74 Total Hours
During its spring break trip to Puerto Rico, the baseball team ran a free youth camp, walking participants through a normal  college practice would be like and talked about what a college experience wold be like if they decided to come to America. 

April 2:
Athletic Department - Relay for Life - Five Teams - 65 Student-Athletes/Staff
65 student-athletes and staff members across six teams combined to raise $3,510 in Relay for Life benefitting cancer research and the American Cancer Society.

Women's Volleyball - Relay for Life - 7 Student-Athletes - 2 Hours Each - 14 Total Hours
The women's volleyball team helped as part of the event staff for the Relay for Life, both setting up for the event and walking in support of cancer research.

Athletic Department - Purple Heart Foundation T-Shirt Drive
The Arcadia Athletic Training Office ran a t-shirt drive to benefit the Purple Heart Foundation. The foundation is a fundraising engine of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, and raises money to support the Order's programs and services.

April 7:
Baseball - Wyncote Fitness Night - 34 Student-Athletes/1 Staff - 3 Hour Event - 105 Total Hours
The team ran a baseball station for Wyncote Fitness Night, as well as assisted in other stations that were short-staffed.

April 8-9:
SAAC - Scarlet and Grey Day - 18 Student-Athletes - 40 Total Hours
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee helped in the set up for Arcadia's Scarlet and Grey Day by setting up tables and chairs the day before the event. The day of the event, the committee served water ice to guests and helped with snow removal at the women's lacrosse game.

April 13:
Women's Soccer - Free Youth Clinic - 12 Student-Athletes - 2 Hour Event - 24 Total Hours
Players from the Arcadia University women's soccer team ran a free youth clinic for 219 girls between the ages of 6 and 14 at Enon Baptist Youth Soccer

April 16:
Softball - StrikeOut Cancer Game (Breast Cancer Awareness) - 17 Student-Athletes/ 4 Coaches - Non-Timed Event
The softball team did its part in the fight against breast cancer as it, in conjunction with the NFCA StrikeOut Cancer campaign, hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Game versus Stevenson. Combined with the fall's t-shirt sales, the Knights raised $1,200 for cancer research, donating the money to The Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade. 

April 17: 
Baseball - Mt. Airy Little League Field Clean Up - 34 Student-Athletes/1 Staff - 2 Hour Event - 70 Total Hours
The baseball team helped clean local little league fields including painting fences, sanding/painting bleachers, weed whacking, planting see, cleaning garbage and fixing bullpens.

Softball - Lakeview's Basket Raffle - 5 Student-Athletes - 4 Hour Event - 20 Total Hours
For the past eight years, the Lakeview School Parent’s Association Basket Raffle has helped raise funds for important special projects. After the lessons of Super Storm Sandy, it is clear that Lakeview School needs a permanent natural gas powered generator to keep vital parts of the school operating - the medical suite, communications center and food storage and preparation areas.The event raised $30,000 and the money raised from the basket raffles will assure the well-being of Lakeview students, many of whom are dependent on ventilators or other medical devices and will maintain the flow of information and communication with families during emergency situations.

April 20:
Women's Soccer - Free Youth Clinic - 12 Student-Athletes - 2 Hour Event - 24 Total Hours
Players from the Arcadia University women's soccer team ran a free youth clinic for 219 girls between the ages of 6 and 14 at Enon Baptist Youth Soccer.

April 22:
Baseball - VS Cancer Game - 34 Student-Athletes/3 Staff - Non-Timed Event
The Arcadia baseball team teamed up with VS Cancer to raise money in the fight against childhood cancer. The team raised approximately $5,250 and honored family and friends affected by cancer by wearing jersey's with their names on the back.

Baseball - Wyncote Day on Campus - 34 Student-Athletes/ 1 Staff - 3 Hour Event - 105 Total Hours
The Reading Club of Wyncote Elementary came to campus for the day. They ate lunch on the green and were given a tour of the campus by some players. Then they came over to the field and we played a wiffle ball game with them. They also stayed to watch our batting practice and infield/outfield.

April 23:
Field Hockey/Swimming - SportsFest - 18 Student-Athletes - 2 Hour Event - 36 Total Hours
More than 80 Montgomery County Rotary Special Athletes (MCRSA) joined representatives of Arcadia Special Athletes Association (ASAA) for a day of soccer, volleyball, swimming and relay races for the annual Sportsfest. The event continues to build upon the strong relationship the University forged with MCRSA more than 25 years ago

April 24: 
Baseball - Mt. Airy Little League Field Clean Up - 34 Student-Athletes/1 Staff - 2 Hour Event - 70 Total Hours
The baseball team helped clean local little league fields including painting fences, sanding/painting bleachers, weed whacking, planting see, cleaning garbage and fixing bullpens.

April 30: 
Field Hockey - Beach Cleanup- 10 Student-Athletes/1 Staff – 3.5 Hour Event – 38.5 Hours
Members of the Arcadia University field hockey team will volunteer for Spring Beach Sweeps, they will be helping with the cleaning of Manasquan beach in New Jersey.
