Ken Spangenberg '08

Ken Spangenberg recently completed his fifth season at the helm of the Arcadia University baseball program in 2016. He is the fifth full-time head coach since Arcadia’s baseball program began in 1995. He posted a 92-95 overall record (50-52 in conference), and coached a total of 19 all-conference selections.

Arcadia went 22-14-1 in 2016, which was highlighted by winning the Roberto Clemente Cup in Puerto Rico. Following the season a total of six players were nanmed to the All-MAC Commonwealth Team, with junior Jordan Draude earning First-Team honors at catcher. 

The Knights posted an overall record of 20-15-1 in 2015, which also saw Arcadia make its first-ever Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) tournament appearance. The Knights were seeded fourth and advanced to the ECAC semifinals with an 8-5 First Round win over fifth-seeded Centenary (N.J.). A total of four Arcadia players were named to the All-Commonwealth Conference team, including senior Andonis Yiantsos (Honorable Mention), juniors Michael Nessel (Second-Team) and Nock Todero (First-Team), and sophomore Justin Chasmar (Honorable Mention). 
 
Spangenberg inherited a program coming off of a three-win season in 2011, and in two short years led the Knights to a 23-19-1 mark in 2013 that included a third-place finish in the Commonwealth Conference. Arcadia advanced to the championship round of the conference tournament for the first time since joining the league in 2009, and the Knights’ 23 wins were the most since 2007.
 
Spangenberg was named the 2013 Commonwealth Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts in rebuilding the program, while the Knights totaled five all-conference selections. Among them was David Jacobs, who was went on to be named a Third-Team All-Region selection by D3Baseball.com.
 
Spangenberg led the team to a 17-win season in 2012, his first year guiding the program, which was an improvement of 14 wins over the previous season. The Knights had one All-Commonwealth Conference selection, as well as Arcadia’s Sophomore Athlete of the Year, Junior Athlete of the Year, and Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards.
 
Prior to his return to Glenside, Spangenberg served as an assistant baseball coach and recruiting coordinator at Edgewood College in Madison, Wisconsin from 2010-11. He led an offense that broke 16 school records while the Eagles claimed their first Northern Athletics Conference Championship after being selected to finish sixth in the preseason poll. While at Edgewood, Spangenberg filled the role of offensive coordinator and infield coach, guiding eight student-athletes to All-Conference accolades and three All-Region honors.
 
Spangenberg served as an assistant coach at Keystone College for the 2009 season, where he worked with the infielders, hitters, and assisted with recruiting. The Giants captured the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship were one game away from the Division III College World Series while posting an overall record of 40-6.  The team was also ranked as high as fourth in the country that season.
 
Under Spangenberg, Keystone’s offense was first in the nation in scoring, second in runs scored, fourth in batting average, fifth in slugging percentage, eighth in home runs, and 16th in stolen bases. Members of the Giants' infield were honored with CSAC Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, a Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner, four All-CSAC selections, one All-Region selection, and one American Baseball Coaches Association All-America selection.
 
Through his time spent at Keystone and Edgewood combined, Spangenberg recruited and coached four players drafted by Major League Baseball teams, plus two additional players who signed professional contracts. 
 
Spangenberg graduated from Arcadia University in 2008 with a bachelor’s in business administration. As a player, Spangenberg was a three-time All-Conference and three-time Academic All-Conference selection while leading the Knights to four straight playoff appearances as a member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (2005-07) and Freedom Conference (2008). He posting a career .355 batting average and is the program record holder for career triples (16).
 
A native of Clarks Summit, Pa., Spangenberg currently resides in Chestnut Hill.
