Delaware Valley nabs last second win from Knights

GLENSIDE, PA: (December 7, 2010) – Despite shooting 52.9% from the field (27-51), including 57.7% (15-26) in the second half, the Knights (2-6overall) were defeated by the Aggies of Delaware Valley (4-3 overall) in a nail-biter by the score of 74-73.  The game, which included 7 ties and 14 lead changes with neither team holding an advantage greater than five points, came down to free throws in the final seconds with the visitors gaining the edge.  Delaware Valley won its third game in a row, all with the game-winning points coming in the final four seconds, to improve to 4-3 overall.

The first half featured the Knights with their largest lead of the game at five but ended with Delaware Valley up 34-31 with a last second shot by the Aggies' Phil Jackson.  Despite the deficit, the Knights put up excellent stats in the half, being led by Jose Ortiz '13 (Philadelphia, PA/Math, Civic, and Science) who scored 13 points and Lester Owens '11 (Manalapan, NJ/St. Joe Metuchen) who dished out four assists.  The Knights outshot the Aggies in the opening frame 48% (12-25) to 46.4% (13-28), while the visitors out-rebounded the home team 19-14.

The second half provided no less thrills than the first as the teams went back and forth scoring, with six lead changes and four ties.  The Aggies held the lead from the start of the second half until the 12:20 mark after an Ortiz layup knotted the teams at 48.  The Knights were able to take their first second half lead at the 7:57 mark with a three-pointer from Jason Thompson '12 (Cape May Court House, NJ/Middle Township).  Three of the six second half lead changes occurred in the final minute, starting with a pair of free throws by Delaware Valley's Jason Goldheimer with 48 seconds left to put Delaware Valley ahead by one, 72-71. Arcadia answered on their next possession as Damien Palantino 'GR (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) hit a layup with 16 seconds left on the clock.  And after all the lead changes and ties and minutes played the game came down to the final seconds when Goldheimer was fouled with four seconds left and was able to sink both shots giving the visitors a 74-73 lead.  Arcadia responded with a last second effort that ended in two missed foul shots with less than a second on the clock.

Despite the negative outcome the contributions by the entire Knights team was unmatched as four players scored in double figures and those that didn't provide scoring contributed just as much in other areas.  Ortiz led the way with a game high 26 points, shooting 11-14 from the field with 5 rebounds.  Junior Colin McCarthy '12 (Langhorne, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) put up 10 points along with 5 rebounds and 2 steals.  Senior Darrell Mills '11 (Philadelphia, PA/Engineering & Science) added 12 points as well, and Palantino scored 10 points, including 2 treys, and provided four assists and 2 steals.  Owens led the team with five assists while first year player Aaron Benusis '14 (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) continued his steady improvement pulling down a team high seven rebounds and protecting the net with two blocks.  Fellow freshman Eric O' Hora '14 (Scranton, PA/Holy Cross), who forced two key second half Aggie turnovers, the first on a drive to the basket from the visitors, the second a tipped ball in the backcourt that led to points the other way for Arcadia, added three points from the foul line, 3 rebounds and an assist in 9 minutes played  The Aggies were paced by three players in double figures, Jeremy Beckett, Jason Goldheimer, and James Jones, who scored 24, 15, and 14 points respectively.

The Knights will look to regroup as they travel over the Walt Whitman Bridge this Thursday to take on Rutgers-Camden in a non conference tilt beginning at 7 PM.  The Knights have two games remaining in the first semester (December 17 at Rosemont College at 7 PM), and will open the second semester with a home date, the first of a season high four game home stand, against Moravian College on January 5 starting at 7 PM.
