Knights Slug Their Way to Spring Break Day One Sweep

N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sunday, March 13, 2011--  Arcadia University Softball opened up the first day of spring break ball in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. posting a pair of compelling victories over Suffolk University and Lycoming College. The Knights (4-0) showed no signs of travel lag, dominating Suffolk, 21-0 in the opener while adding an 11-6 non-conference win over Commonwealth Conference opponent Lycoming College in the night cap.

Extra base hits was the theme of the day with the Knights serving up 11 of them over the two-game stretch.  Leading the Knights opening day offensive onslaught was senior Virginia Buechel, who notched her 100th career RBI. Buechel finished the day with three doubles going 6-for-8 with seven RBI and three runs scored.  Sophomore Brandee Zablotsky saw her first action of the 2011 season and delivered on 6-for-8 at the dish with five runs scored and four RBI. Sophomore Marissa Perez went 5-for-7 with four runs scored and five RBI while classmate Corrin Showalter cranked three doubles going 4-for-7 with four runs scored and five RBI. First-year catcher Leanda Helms launched her first collegiate home run ball and finished the day 4-for-8 with three runs scored and two RBI. Senior Ashley McCarthy added two doubles going 4-for-8 with two runs scored and two RBI. Complete game stats will be posted as available.

Just as extra base hits was the theme on offense, on the mound, it was strikeouts, where the Knight's pitching staff combined for 15 K's against the two opponents. Opening game pitcher senior Kellie Reese threw a three-hit shutout and hurled six K's with no walks to Suffolk out of Boston, Mass. Junior Kelsey Roberts was the winner of game two, allowing seven Lycoming hits and four walks, but threw nine K's.

Arcadia plays Principia College out of Illinois tomorrow at 9:30 a.m., followed by Barton College (N.C.) at 1:30 p.m.
