Knights Sweep Aggies, Win Fourth Straight

DOYLESTOWN, Pa., Thursday, April 7, 2011-- Winners of three of their last four, Arcadia Softball captured two more victories today, visiting cross-conference opponent Delaware Valley College. The Knights (14-6/3-3 C'wealth) defeated the Aggies (7-11) 8-3 in game one and 3-0 in the nightcap.

Arcadia, batting .368 as a team, pounded out a dozen hits in the opening game and allowed five but never relinquished their composure. Junior Kelsey Roberts got the game one start for the Knights and was flawless, retiring after the fourth inning, working a no-hitter behind a 5-1 Knights lead. It would be Roberts eighth win of the season (8-2). First-year Heather Buriak entered in the fifth and finished three innings of work having allowed two runs for the Aggies on five hits but her teammates tacked on three more scores to keep command of the game.

The Knights' offense was provided by a multitude of extra-base hit producing runs started by a two run blast over the left field fence from sophomore Brandee Zablotsky in the second inning to bring Arcadia back from a 1-0 deficit. In the fourth inning, with one out down, the Aggies walked two Knights before senior Ashley McCarthy singled to center field loading the bases. Arcadia would get their first run of the inning to go up 3-1 complements of a Lindsey Henchinski '12 single. Their next two runs, again, coming off the bat of Zablotsky, with a two-run single to deep center, a 5-1 Knights lead. In the fifth, first-year Jess Wood doubled to right center and came home on first-year Leanda Helms' double to left center, a 6-1 Arcadia advantage. The Aggies would muster up two runs on a five-hit sixth inning but it wouldn't matter as the Knights created two more runs in the sixth. Sophomore Marissa Perez drove in Henchinski on a double to center and then came home on a ground out from Zablotsky to cap Arcadia's 8-3 win in game one.

Wood received head coach Linda Detra's nod as the Knights' game two starter and delivered her finest performance to date. Woods walked Del Vals' lead-off batter in the first and then showed no signs of nerves, graciously providing strike out after strikeout, finishing with a career high of 10 through her complete game win, evening her season record at 2-2. Woods dished out three strikeouts in the first inning and two in each of the second and fifth, allowing just three hits to the Aggies through seven. Scoreless after one, senior Virginia Buechel knocked out her third home run of the season, a lead-off shot over left field to start the second. Sophomore Corrin Showalter tacked on an RBI single to left to make it 2-0 Knights but Del Val would turn the Knights away on a bases loaded third out. Arcadia added one more score in the fifth. Junior Erin Wojcieszyn connected on a double to left center and scored on an RBI single to center from Buechel and from that point on allowed their defense and Wood to keep the Aggies off the board in the 3-0 victory, the team's fourth shutout of the year.

Arcadia will look to continue their hot streak this Saturday when they travel to Albright for a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
