Moravian stops Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa.:   Moravian College's Chelsea Grotyohann ended a scoreless game in the 44th minute on a penalty stroke and the Greyhounds added one more score to hand visiting Arcadia University a 2-0 loss in non-conference field hockey action Friday afternoon at Betty Prince Field.  Arcadia remained persistent in their offensive efforts, outshooting the Greyhounds 14-13 but suffer their 6th straight loss to open the season, the fifth decided by two goals or less.

Arcadia (0-6) was awarded a penalty stroke in the 5th minute, taken by first year Molly Goldstein (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) and saved by Moravian keeper Andrea Eck.  The Knights would test Eck with 8 shots on goal and each one was denied to help her team to their fourth win of the season (4-1).  Arcadia generated some late offensive pressure in the first half, awarded two corners in the final two minutes of play, with junior Marilyn Beatty's (Chalfont, PA/North Penn) shot knocked down by Eck as the two teams entered the half tied at 0.

The Greyhounds came knocking early in the second half, with six straight shots into Arcadia junio keeper Sarah Baumgardner (Hatboro, PA/Upper Moreland) who turned away four, a fifth went wide and the final kicked away by sophomore Pam Schweitzer (Fleetwood, PA.Fleetwood), credited with the defensive save.  But that play resulted in a penalty stroke for the hosts and 1-0 lead.  In the 60th minutes Moravian's Briana Van Buskirk broke free and scored on Baumgardner giving the Greyhounds a 2-0 advantage.

Arcadia was unable to convert on any their game high 9 corner opportunities into scores and were led in the loss by Beatty and Goldstein, each with 3 shots on goal.

The Knights play their seventh straight road contest next Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Delaware Valley College before returning home for their home opener on Thursday, Sept. 22 hosting Keystone College at 4 p.m.
