Knights stave off Berkeley to win third straight

Box Score

University Heights-Newark, NJ:  First year Aaron Webb scored 15 points to help the Knights of Arcadia University Men's Basketball push their win streak to 3 with Saturday's 74-66 victory over the Knights of Berkeley College in non-conference play.

The Knights (8-4 Overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) trailed by 4 at halftime, 34-30, yet won the second half by 12 with a balanced offense of five players scoring 9 or more points.  First year Joe Brown (Philadelphia, PA/LaSalle) and senior Colin McCarthy (Langhorne, PA/Holy Ghost) scored nine apeice while junior Khalief Trawick (Philadelphia, PA/Franklin Learning Center) and returning junior Malcolm Still (Lawnside, NJ/Living Faith) added 10 and 11 points respectively.  First year Aaron Webb (Norristown, PA/Norristown) led all scorers with 15 for Arcadia.

Berkeley (3-10 Overall) was led by a team high 13 points from Davonn Boyd.  Daniel Waynick added 8 points on 4-6 shooting along with 10 rebounds to lead the Berkeley who out-rebounded Arcadia 35-30.

The initial 7 minutes of the game was full of back and forth action as it sat at 12-11 in favor of Berkeley after a layup from Davonn Boyd.  Nevertheless, just as the two teams seemed to be going bucket for bucket, Arcadia went on a 14-4 run, capped by a Malcolm Still jumper, giving Arcadia a 25-16 lead with 7 minutes remaining.  But now it was the Knights of Berkeley's turn to go on a run of their own.  Berkeley finished the half on an 18-5 run to give them a 34-30 lead at the break.

The second half started out slow with only 6 total points scored in 5 minutes of game time as the score remained 36-34 Berkeley with 14:52 to go in the game.  Arcadia finally regained the lead 39-38 after a huge 3-pointer from first year Jermaine Clarke (Philadelphia, PA/Crefeld).  Clarke added the much needed spark for the Knights who would not relinquish their lead.  However, it was not easy for Arcadia, as they never led by more than 7 points for the remainder of the game.  With Arcadia hanging onto a 66-64 lead with only 22 seconds left, the Knights finished the game out on a 8-2 run by stopping Berkeley on the offensive end and converting on 6-6 free throws and an eight-point margin of victory.

Berkeley shot 43.3% from the floor, 25% from long-range and 61.9% from the line while Arcadia shot 49.1%, 25% from three-point land, and 60% from the line earning them the victory in the battle of the Knights.

Tonight's win was the third straight for Arcadia who has a tough week of conference play ahead of them as they first travel to Reading, PA to face off with Alvernia University this Wednesday (1/11) at 6 p.m. before returning home to play the undefeated Lycoming College Warriors (12-0 overall, 2-0 Commonwealth) on 11/14 at 3 p.m.
