McCarthy Secures Victory as Men's Basketball Defeats Stevenson

Box Score Owings Mills, MD (December 1, 2012) - Colin McCarthy drew a charge with less than 10 seconds to play that kept the Arcadia University Knights (3-2, 1-1) in front and gave them a 71-68 win at the Stevenson Mustangs (3-2, 0-2). Travis Saltus, who led the Knights with 17 points, then hit a pair of free throws and a missed shot by Stevenson gave Arcadia the victory. The Knights led by as many as 14 points in the win and were able to hold off Stevenson at the end.

Arcadia started the game on a 15-6 run to take the nine point lead less than six minutes into the game. They continued to extend their cushion and led 23-10 midway through the first half. The Knights held that lead and went into the break with a 36-24 lead.

Khalief Trawick had 10 points to lead Arcadia in the first half. The Knights shot nearly 50% from the field in the first half and held Stevenson to 34%. The Mustangs did control the boards, 25-16, but committed 12 turnovers while forcing just three.

The Mustangs immediately chipped into the lead to start the second half. They got to within three several times and then to within two points at 44-42 at the 14:53 mark. Stevenson finally tied the game at 60 and then took a 63-60 lead with 4:58 to play. There were two ties and three lead changes in the final three minutes.

Arcadia went up for good at 69-68 on a jumper by Saltus. With 11-seconds to play, McCarthy took the charge on Brett Burrier. Saltus hit two frees on the ensuing possession and then Stevenson missed a three as the horn sounded giving the Knights the three-point victory.

Saltus was 7-11 from the field with three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Trawick and Joe Brown each added 12 points. Stefon McCray led all scorers with 26 points for the Mustangs. Arcadia shot 54.7% from the field and held Stevenson to 41%. Stevenson controlled the boards 38-27, but committed 21 turnovers.

Arcadia will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Lebanon Valley for an 8pm tip-off in Glenside.
