Caligiuri's 27 points leads Women's Basketball Past Cairn

Box Score Glenside, PA (December 30, 2012) - Freshman Samantha Caligiuri scored a career-high and game-high 27 points to lead the Arcadia University Knights (6-5) to a 75-48 victory over the Cairn University Highlanders (0-7) this afternoon. Arcadia used a pair of runs in the first half to open up a 22-point halftime lead and the Highlanders could only get as close as 17 points early in the second half. Arcadia goes into the new year having won two in a row.

The game was close for the first five minutes, but with the Knights trailing 6-5 they went on a 19-4 run to take a 24-10 lead at the 9:55 mark. The Highlanders scored the next five points, but Arcadia then went on a 16-3 run to take a 40-18 lead with just over two minutes to play. The Knights went into the break with a 44-22 advantage.

Caligiuri scored 12 points in the first half for Arcadia. Hannah McCardle scored nine to lead Cairn. The Knights shot 47% from the field in the first half and held the Highlanders to 38%. Arcadia had an 18-17 lead on the boards and forced 19 turnovers while committing just seven.

Cairn cut into the Arcadia lead to start the second half, making the score 46-29 with 16:34 to play. The Knights then went on a 22-4 run to open up a 35-point lead, 68-33 at the 8:22 mark. Arcadia led by as many as 36 in the final eight minutes and won by the 27-point margin.

Caligiuri was 11-19 from the field and had six assists and four steals. Morgan Wensley added 12 points and Victoria Mazzeo added 11 points, both off the bench. Dominque Hassinger had nine assists and six steals. McCardle finished with 20 points to lead Cairn. Arcadia finished with 44% from the field, while Cairn shot 37%. The Knights won the board battle 39-35 and scored 36 points off of 28 Highlander turnovers.

Arcadia will return to action on Wednesday night when they host Penn-State Brandywine for a 7pm tip-off in Alumni Gym.
