Helms & Perez Help Knights Double Up on Abington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ABINGTON, Pa.:  Arcadia University swept local rival Penn State Abington in today's non-conference softball doubleheader behind the bigs bats of junior first baseman Marissa Perez over both games and sophomore catcher Leanda Helms in the nightcap.  The Knights won both contests by the ten-run rule and improve to 9-5 overall.

Perez, who was a perfect 3 for 3 in game two, finished 5 for 7 on the day with 4 runs scored and 3 RBI an no fielding errors.  Arcadia won game one by an 11-1 count behind a four-hitter from sophomore Heather Buriak. Buriak tossed the complete game, allowing one run off 5 hits and 2 walks with a pair of K's through 22 batters.

Helms, also perfect behind the plate in her game two start, unleased back-to-back homers, a two-run shot in the fifth and a three-run shot in the sixth. Helms finished 3 for 4 on two homers and a double, with 3 runs scored and 6 RBI.  The Knights got a two-hitter from senior Kelsey Roberts in the 13-2 game two victory.

Arcadia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening game after one inning played, going to market in the second, scoring 6 runs off 5 hits and 2 Penn State fielding errors.  With the bases loaded on a walk and two singles to center, a walk to sophomore Amanda Tomaschek made it 3-0 followed by a sac fly from junior Brandee Zablotsky for a 4-0 Knight's lead.  Sophomore Jess Wood followed with a two-run double to left center making it 6-0 Knights with Perez adding an RBI single and later scoring on an error putting the Knights on top 8-0.

An RBI double to right center from senior Lindsay Henchinski and run scoring triple to right field from Tomaschek provided Arcadia two more scores in the third as the Knights owned a commanding 10-0 lead.

Penn State salvaged the game in the fourth, plating a score to stay alive on a home run, however, the Knights countered in the fifth when Tomaschek scored on a single up the middle from Perez with Arcadia regaining their ten-run cushion.  Arcadia's defense held it together in the bottom of the fifth to take the game.

Tomaschek finished the opener 1-1 with 3 runs and 2 RBI and 3 walks.  Wood went 2-3 with a run scored and 3 RBI, Henchinski 2-2 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI and senior Erin Wojcieszyn 2-2 with 2 runs scored.

With a 4-0 lead in the nightcap heading into the fifth inning, Arcadia put up four runs in the fifth and five in the sixth, five of those nine runs from Helms' two home runs.

Abington did manage to score two in the bottom of the fifth but with Arcadia leading 13-2 and facing their potential final at-bat of the contest in the home half of the sixth, Roberts gave them little chance to produce any more offense, catching three Penn State batters swinging on strike three for the victory.

Senior Amy Johnson put up a 2 for 3 effort in the nightcap with 2 runs scored.  Roberts finished the complete game allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and 5 walks with 6 strikeouts through 27 batters.

The Knights move on to face Eastern University in their home opener on Thursday, March 22 in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
