Women's Tennis Duke it out with Eastern, Gaughan Streaks to 6th Straight

ST. DAVIDS, PA (April 12, 2012) - Arcadia Women's Tennis helped themselves to a 2-1 lead on host Eastern University at the conclusion of doubles competition and watched with suspense as No. 5 Danielle Riggins '14 and No. 6 LaToya Fluker each took their singles' opponent to third set tie-breakers, both ending in the Eagles favor as the Knights dropped their third straight one-point decision following today's non-legue matchup.

The team has shown great resolve against some tough competition as of late which will be useful as the Knights return to their Commonwealth schedule this Saturday at home against Lycoming College beginning at 12 Noon.

Propeling Arcadia to an early 2-1 lead were Beth Osipowitz '12 and Kaila Gaughan '15 at No. 1 Doubles, knocking off Eastern's Jenna Laubach/Angela Littlefield with ease (8-3). Another win followed at No. 2 with Jasmine Peake '14 and Viola Sawyer '15 pounding out an 8-5 victory over Jacquelyn Saunder/Kim Kirk.

Gaughan ran her spring season singles record to 6-1 this season, and is undefeated in the last 6 matches. She defeated Eastern's Saunder 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2 in one of the Knight's two wins during singles play. The other went to newcomer Viola Sawyer, her first of her collegiate career, topping Martha Dietz 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4. Sawyer finished 2-0 on the day.

The two marathon sets that would decide today's outcome came from Riggins at No. 5 and Fluker playing No. 6. Riggins fell down after her first set against Amanda Prescott but battled back in the second to force the tie-breaker eventually bowing to Prescott 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Fluker won her first set 6-3 but saw Jenn Balbi turn the tables in set two (6-3) and pull out a 7-5 win in the tie-breaker to lift the Eagles to a one-point victory.
