Arcadia Softball Gets Another Determined Outing from Roberts at Lycoming

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WILLIAMSPORT, PA (April 14, 2012) - With a shake-up to their regular starting lineup Arcadia Univeristy faced the task of coming out of today's Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with a pair of needed wins over a hungry host in Lycoming College, a team without a win in their last 16 chances.  Arcadia dropped the run-rule shortened opener, 10-2 but a determined Kelsey Roberts '12 rode a two-hitter into the sixth inning of the nightcap but then got into some sixth inning trouble that her offense couldn't solve in the seventh and the Warriors held on to win 3-0.

In the opener, Lycoming took a 2-0 lead into the top of the fifth when the Knights resolved to erase it with a two-run inning of their own.  Warriors' starter Holly Lansberry pegged Katie Resh '14 on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to push the Knight's first score across.  Erin Wojcieszyn '12 then tied the game at 2-2 when she followed with an RBI single.

On the offensive side of the ball, the host Warriors got the boost they needed from freshman Nikki Marianelli, who notched a two-run single in the 5th while her sister Allyson Marianelli followed with an RBI single to make it a 5-2 Lycoming lead.  In her next at-bat in the sixth, N. Mairanelli scorched her first career home run, a three run shot, out of the park to cap the eigth-run rule shortened contest with a 10-2 decision in their favor.

Arcadia starter Jess Wood '14 (7-6) was tagged with the game one loss through four and two-third innings, allowing 2 earned on 7 hits, 2 walks and 2 K's. Lansberry completed the game for her third of the season (3-6) allowing 1 earned off 3 hits with 4 walks and 3 K's.

In the nightcap, Arcadia was forced to deal with Lycoming starter Brie Bragna, who dealt an impressive five-hit shutout for her third victory this season.

The scoreless game lasted all the way until the bottom of the sixth as Roberts got into a jam, when a walk, wild pitch and ground out yeilded Lycoming's three scores.  In an attempt to lift the Knights out of trouble, Wojcieszyn belted out another single hoping to spark some seventh inning heroics for Arcadia, but it would come with two-outs with the third that quickly followed resulting in a sweep for the home Warriors in today's league doubleheader.

Roberts (3-7) finished witha  four-hitter with 3 earned against 2 walks and 1 K.  Braga (3-8) walked 2 and struck out 3 thorugh seven innings of work.

Lycoming improves to 7-16 overall (2-6 CC).

The Knights will attempt to recover from a four-game skid (13-17 Overall / 2-8 CC) when they host Gwynedd Mercy College Sunday (April 15) at 2 p.m. at Blankley Field.  Head Coach Linda Detra remains with 399 career wins at the start of Sunday's non-leage doubleheader.
