Arcadia Softball Takes Two from Wesley

DOVER, DE (April 17, 2012) - Two days after giving head coach Linda Detra her 400th career victory, Arcadia Softball continued their winning ways by sweeping host Wesley College in today's non-league doubleheader. Arcadia defeated the Wolverines 5-1 in today's opener behind a complete game performance from starter Kelsey Roberts '12 while game two starter Heather Buriak '14 helped to secure the team's 7-6 win in the nightcap.

Marissa Perez '13 knocked around 5 hits on 8 plate appearances, scoring 3 times with an RBI to pace the Knight's offense.  Arcadia improve to 16-18 overall.  Wesley drops to 13-20-1 overall.

The Knights did all of their damage in the opener in innings one and two to take a 5-0 lead. 

Erin Wojcieszyn '12 singled to lead-off the first and would be brought in on an RBI single from Perez.  Amanda Tomasheck '14 was walked as the second batter of the innging and scored on a ground out by Jess Wood '14 while Perez was brought in by a single up the middle from Ashley John '14.   

With the score 3-0 Knights, Wesley gave up two more scores on errors to Arcadia in the second, an unearned run from Buriak who stole home and a run scored by Katie Resh '14 off a ground out by Tomasheck.

The score remained unchanged until Wesley pushed their only run of the game across due to a throwing error from Arcadia but the win would go to Roberts, her 4th of the season (4-8), in a complete game outing with no earned off 6 hits, 2 walks and 2 K's. 

Again in the nightcap Arcadia did alot of damage in the eraly frames, however this time, the Wolverines would keep pace.  The Knights opened the first with three runs on 3 hits and 2 errors but Wesley countered with two of their own in the home half for a 3-2 Arcadia lead.

Jess Campbell '13 pulled a a two-run double down the right field line to bring in Alexandra Schaffer '15 and Wojcieszyn with Perez following with run number three off a Wesley throwing error.

In the top of two, Arcadia added three more scores to go up 6-2.  Schaffer ripped a double into the gap in right field scoring Sarah Engle '15 and then came home on another Wesley throwing error.  Wesley racked up 5 errors in game two and totaled 7 on the afternoon.  A fielding error would plate Perez as the Knight's third run of the inning.

The two teams traded single runs in the third before Wesley put up three in the bottom of the fourth to make it just a one-run game with AU in front 7-6.   With three more innings to follow, although scoring ceased for Arcadia, the Knight's forced Wesley to strand 5 base runners as they held on to to sweep the two-game stint.

Buriak picked up her fifth win of the season (5-4) going 3 innings with 5 earned  off 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 3.  Corrin Showalter '13 entered in the fourth allowing no earned off 5 hits for her first save of the season.

Arcadia moves on to prepare for a must-win Commonwealth Conference doubleheader this Saturday at home against the defending league champion Messiah College Falcons.  First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Blankley Field.
