Arcadia Softball Rallies For Game-One Eight-Run Explosion Against Haverford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
GLENSIDE, PA (April 24, 2012) - Facing a two-run deficit in today's opener, Arcadia University Softball rallied with an eight-run eruption in innings five and six claiming a 9-3 victory over visiting Haverford College in the Knight's final non-league twin bill of the 2012 season.  The win gives Arcadia no. 17 on the season (17-21).  The Fords (16-16-10 went on to win the nightcap 5-1.

Game one starter Kelsey Roberts '12 (5-9) recorded her fifth victory this season, throwing five frames with 4 strikeouts against a scattering of 6 hits.  Heather Buriak '14 assured Roberts her win when she entered in the sixth and pitched a one-hitter through the final two innnings.

Arcadia gained the early 1-0 lead but the Fords went ahead 3-1 in the top of the fourth.  Haverford sandwiched a walk around a pair of doubles to lead off the top of the fifth but the second extra-base hit held the left field line forcing the Fords to hold off on sending third base home. While an error brought in an unearned run to give the Fords a 3-1 lead, Roberts beared down and forced a fly out, pop up and ground out to get her Knights out of the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, Arcadia was nothing but a thorn in the Ford's side, scoring four runs on four hits, even leaving the bases loaded when the inning was through. Erin Wojcieszyn '12 dribbled an infield single to score Corrin Showalter off her lead-off single.  Lindsay Henchinski '12, back in the lineup following a near 10 game abscence, clearly didn't lose her reliable bat, delivering a single to right field, while a walk to Marissa Perez '13 followed to load the bags. Jess Wood ' 12 who leads the team in RBI (21), tacked on another with single to short to tie the game at 3-all.  Walks to Ashley John '14 and Amy Johnson '12 made it a 5-3 Arcadia lead when all was said and done.

Haverford was right there with a potential comeback in the top of the sixth but Buriak served up only one hit to the visitors and got a ground out and pop up to take her Knights into the home half with their two-run lead still in tact.

Arcadia continued to deliever some offensive excitement on their home field, producing another four-run inning in the sixth, ripping 5 hits against Fords' leading starter Claire Fitzgerald.  Those scores would come on an RBI single from Perez, a two-run triple from Leanda Helms '14, capped off by an RBI double from John.  Buriak dealt another solid inning to win it for the Knights in the top of the seventh, yielding just a walk to the Fords and a victory for the Knights after a two-game slide this past weekend.

In game two, Arcadia was allowed just 6 hits from Fords no. 2 ace Brittany Stevenson. From them, the Knights scored just one time when Alexandra Schafer '15 was brought home off a line-out after she led off the inning with a center field double.  That run had tied the game at 1-all after the Fords began the third with the game's first run.

Haverford broke the game open in the top of the fourth, and capitalized on 3 Arcadia infielding errors with three scored to take a 4-1 lead.  From that point on, Arcadia was dealt just two more hits across the fifth, sixth and seventh while the Fords tacked on an insurance tally to earn the 5-1 victory, forcing a split in today's non-league doubleheader.

Game two starter Jess Wood allowed no earned run and worked 4 innings with 2 strikeouts against 5 hits.  Buriak, also with 2 strikeouts, re-entered as the game-two reliever and pitched the final three frames with 1 earned off 2 hits.

The Knights will honor their four seniors- Henchinski, Johnson, Roberts and Wojceiszyn- this Saturday prior to their 1 p.m. start with Commonwealth Conference rival Albright College.  Saturday's home doubleheader will close the 2012 season.
