Box Score GLENSIDE, Pa. (September 1, 2012) – Pressed into duty following the loss of their top three goalkeepers, freshman defender/midfielder
Ashley Vaitis made eight saves as the Arcadia University women's soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 3-0 setback against Haverford College as part of the Haverford Kickoff Classic on Saturday afternoon.
With all 3 of Arcadia's goalkeepers sidelined with weekend-long to season-ending injuries to start the season, left First-Year midfield/defender
Ashley Vaitis to shoulder the burden for the team. "What an amazing effort by Ashley!", said coach Brownell. "Ashley did her absolute best and we're all very proud of her efforts... also sophomore's
Alex Stoner and
Nina Barbieri strengthened the center of the field very well in front of Ashley but to no avail."
The Fords opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when senior midfielder Allie Chen lofted a shot from 20 yards out over the out-stretched arms of Vaitis. Haverford extended its lead to 2-0 later in the first half when junior Elizabeth Newman headed home a shot off a corner kick.
The Knights played a better half defensively in the second period – limiting Haverford to just one goal. Coach Brownell is confident in the future. "Our starting line-up this season has only 3 of last year's starters, so we need to move quickly to tighten up our play. We have little doubt that the future is bright."
Arcadia will look to bounce back on Sunday when the Knights take on William Paterson University or the University of Scranton. Game-time is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Walton Field on the campus of Haverford.
