Glenside, Pa (September, 22, 2012): The Arcadia Women's soccer continued their strong run over the past few weeks by playing 110 minutes of scoreless soccer vs Wilkes this afternoon at Arcadia's new Easton Field. Both teams exchanged attacking play throughout the game but stingy defense and strong goalkeeping was the predominant forces today as neither team managed to finish on the few looks at goal that existed. The Knights now sit with a record of 5-2-2 while the Colonels are now 4-2-1.
The game was evenly played throughout. Neither the Knights nor the Colonels could find the back of the net in a game that became a defensive struggle. Both goalies had fantastic games and anchored defenses that would not break.
For the visiting Colonels, freshman Kate Mahoney had four saves in 110 minutes of play. Sophomore Veronica Willig had another big night in the net for the Knights. Willig also finished with four saves, including two huge saves in the second overtime that allowed the Knights to walk off Easton Field with a tie.
The teams battled through the two halves and two extra stanzas, each generating chances but failing to capitalize. The Colonels finished with ten shots to the Knights nine. For the Knights, junior Fatima Elmedkhar came off the bench early in the first half and quickly made an impact. Elmedkhar finished with three shots and continually tested the Wilkes defense.
Arcadia's defense was anchored by strong efforts from junior Kelley Gallagher, freshman Jenna Mirabelli, senior Caitlin Jade McDonnell, and sophomore Alex Stoner. Nineteen Knights saw action and contributed to the result.
Coach Brownell wasn't completely disappointed with today's tie. "Wilkes has a very good squad... their defense scrambled well and their keeper had some excellent saves. I felt that we ran hard and hustled for over 100 mins straight. I felt we were fit and worked hard all over the field. We just couldn't finish our chances."
The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday as hosts to Delaware Valley College. That game is scheduled for a 7 PM start on Easton Field. This will be the last non-conference tune-up for the Knights, who open Commonwealth play next Saturday with a 3 PM game at Elizabethtown.
