Field Hockey Pulls Out 2-1 Double-Overtime Win at Widener

Box Score CHESTER, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Debbie Wolfe (West Brunswick, N.J.) scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 92nd-minute, to give the Arcadia University field hockey team a 2-1 double-overtime MAC Commonwealth victory at Widener University Wednesday night. It was the third straight multi-goal game for Wolfe, who leads the team with 10 goals for the season.

The Knights improved to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference with the win, while the Pride fell to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Tonight's victory marked the program's first win over Widener since joining the MAC in 2007.

Arcadia got off to a quick start when Wolfe scored her first goal of the match off a penalty corner 6:39 into the contest. Sophomore back Taylor Dalisera (Millersville, Md.) took the initial shot off the corner, which was deflected in front of the cage by Wolfe and past junior goalkeeper Maggie Karmeris (Wilmington, Del.).

The score remained 1-0 for the Knights until 5:55 into the second half when Senior forward Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, Pa.) scored off a ball that was initially deflected by an Arcadia defender. The Knights appeared poised to end the game at the very end of regulation after being awarded a penalty corner in the 70th-minute, but Sophomore forward Ashley Aires (Bayville, N.J.) came up with a defensive save on senior back Ashley Ditchey's (Nicholson, Pa.) shot with just 10 seconds left in the period.

Arcadia dominated in both overtime periods, outshooting Widener 7-1 before Wolfe found the back of the cage midway through the second overtime period. Karmeris stopped a shot from junior forward Molly Goldstein (Oak Ridge, N.J.), but the rebound went right to junior midfielder Morgan Paese (Harrisburg, Pa.) who swept the ball to Wolfe for the goal 6:31 into the second overtime.

Freshman goalkeeper Brittany Hodson (Highesville, Md.) recorded a pair of saves for the Knights as she improved her record to 8-4. Karmeris was outstanding in goal for the Pride, recording 14 saves to keep Widener in the match.

Arcadia outshot the Pride 19-6 in the match with an 8-1 advantage after the first 70 minutes. The Knights also had an 18-7 edge in penalty corners.

Arcadia will return to action Saturday when it hosts a 5:30 p.m. MAC Commonwealth match against No. 12 Messiah College at Easton Field.
