Men’s Basketball Falls at Christopher Newport in Season-Opener, 79-66

Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team fell at Christopher Newport University Saturday evening in a non-conference contest. It was the season-opener for both teams.
 
Junior guard Travis Saltus (Teaneck, N.J.) scored 19 points with three steals, two assists and two rebounds to lead the Knights, while junior forward Joe Brown (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted 14 points with seven boards. Sophomore guard John Landro (Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points.
 
Junior guard Mike Cherry (Lewiston, N.C.) poured in a game-high 24 points with three rebounds and three steals to lead the Captains to the win, while senior guard/forward Tra Benefield (Folkston, Ga.) scored 15 points with seven boards. Three Christopher Newport players added eight points each.
 
Both teams got off to a slow start as the Captains' held a narrow 7-4 lead four minutes into the game before a 13-2 run gave Arcadia a 17-9 lead, and Christopher Newport responded with a 10-2 run to knot the score at 19-19 with 7:23 to go in the opening half. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the half and Cherry drained a three with two seconds on the clock to give the Captains a 37-36 lead at intermission.
 
Christopher Newport never trailed again the rest of the way, going on an 11-2 run to open the second half to open a 48-39 advantage. Arcadia trailed by six after Landro knocked down a pair of free throws with 2:46 remaining in the game to make it 72-66, but that was as close as the Knights would get the rest of the way as the Captains closed the game with a 7-2 run.
 
Arcadia shot 42.2 percent (27-64) from the field, but struggled from three-point range, going 4for-19 (21.1 percent).  CNU shot 42.2 percent (27-64) from the floor and 30 percent (6-20) from downtown.
 
The Knights will return to action Wednesday when they host Bryn Athyn College at 7 p.m. at Alumni Gymnasium.
