Box Score NEWARK, N.J. – Junior guard Travis Saltus (Teaneck, N.J.) knocked down what proved to be the game-winning free throw with just eight seconds left on the clock as the Arcadia University men's basketball team recorded a 67-66 non-conference victory at Rutgers-Newark Thursday night.
The Knights improved to 4-3 with the win, while the Scarlet Raiders fell to 6-3 with the loss, snapping a four-game winning streak.
It was a back-and-forth game the entire way, with neither team leading by more than six points and a total of 14 lead changes throughout the contest.
Arcadia led be a narrow 65-62 margin after junior forward
Jose Figueroa (Philadelphia, Pa.) dropped in a layup with 43 seconds left in the game, and junior guard John Snow (Newark, N.J.) answered with a layup at the other end with 28 seconds, but missed the free throw that followed after being fouled on the play to make it a 65-64 contest in favor of the Knights.
Sophomore forward David Azoroh (Ewing, N.J.) pulled down the offensive board off the missed free throw, but missed the put-back attempt and Arcadia junior forward
Joe Brown (Philadelphia, Pa.) grabbed the defensive board. He the fed the ball to freshman guard
Ryan Kelley (Mt. Arlington, N.J.), who was fouled and went 1-for-2 at the line to give Arcadia a two-point lead.
Snow missed on a jumper at the other end on the ensuing possession and Saltus grabbed the rebound off the miss. He was immediately fouled and made one of his two attempts to give the Knights a 67-64 lead with eight ticks on the clock.
The two teams exchanged turnovers off the inbounding play, giving the Scarlet Knights one last shot to tie the game, but junior guard Chris Foreman's (Union, N.J.) three was off the mark and Azoroh's layup the followed was not enough, giving Arcadia the one-point win.
Figueroa scored a team-best 18 points to go with eight boards and two blocks to lead the Knights to the win, while Brown finished with 11 points , six boards and three steals. Junior guard
Torrell Candelaria (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore guard
John Landro (Cornwall on Hudson, N.Y.) chipped in with eight points each.
Snow finished with a game-high 22 points while collecting nine rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead Rutgers-Newark, while junior guard Doze Ikwuebu (Union, N.J.) added 17 points. Junior forward Christian Garcia (Freehold, N.J.) added 12 points with six boards.
Arcadia held the edge in three-point and free throw shooting, making seven threes and was 16-for-22 at the line, while Rutgers-Newark made just three shots from beyond the arc and was 13-of-16 at the stripe.
The Knights will return to action Monday with a non-conference contest at William Paterson University at 7 p.m.
