Softball Starts 2013 Season with First Win since 2009 Over Messiah

Box Score Grantham, PA (March 2, 2013) - The Arcadia University Knights (1-0) started the 2013 season with a 12-8 win over the Messiah College Falcons (0-3). This is the first win for the Knights over Messiah since 2009. Arcadia jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held off the Falcons in the later innings. Brandee Zablotsky was the offensive star with three hits, three runs and four RBI.

The Knights started quickly with a three spot in the first. Arcadia scored an unearned run then Brandee Zablotsky hit an RBI triple for a 2-0 lead. They added the third run on a suicide squeeze executed by Leanda Helms that scored Zablotsky. The Knights then scored four in the second as Nicole Larro hit an RBI single and another run scored on the play unearned. Zablotsky then hit a two-run homer for a 7-0 Arcadia lead.

Messiah scored two in the third and four in the fourth to make the score 7-6. Arcadia responded with three in the sixth as Helms hit an RBI single and the Knights scored two more unearned runs, taking a 10-6 lead into the seventh. They added two more in the seventh on an RBI single by Alexandra Schafer and an RBI groundout for Zablotsky to make the score 12-6. Messiah scored two in the seventh and were threatening for more, but the game ended when a Messiah runner was thrown out at third and the Knights won 12-8.

Zablotsky was 3-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. Helms was 2-4 with a pair of RBI. Jessica Shotwell scored two runs and Schafer scored three runs. Jessica Wood earned the win, pitching 3.1 and allowing two runs on five hits.

Game two of the doubleheader will be played they afternoon.
