Men’s soccer blanks Mount Saint Vincent, 1-0

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's soccer team recorded a 1-0 non-conference victory over visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent Wednesday night to improve to 5-3-1 for the season. The Dolphins fell to 5-6-0 with the loss.

The Knights put the pressure on right from the start and generated a couple quality scoring chances from the onset. Junior forward Matt Ross put a shot just past the right post 1:08 into the game and senior midfield Alex Wells rang a shot off the left post just over a minute later. The ensuing rebound went right to freshman back Jonathan Tiralosi, and his bid to put the ball home was blocked.

Senior midfielder Nick Morris finally broke through for Arcadia in the 16th-minute for the only goal of the game. Ross fed a cross from the right wing into the box and Morris timed it perfectly, redirecting the ball on a sliding effort for his second goal of the year. The assist was the fourth of the season for Ross.

The Knights continued to generate scoring chances the rest of the way, but were unable to cash in. Morris had a couple golden opportunities in the second half, taking four straight shots in the 70th-75th minutes. One attempt was stopped by sophomore keeper David Melchor and the rebound went right back to Morris, who launched a bicycle kick attempt with his back to the goal just past the upper right corner. He was then fed a pass at the top of the box two minutes later, but got too much of it and it just cleared the crossbar.

Junior keeper Seth Shoap recorded four saves in the match for Arcadia as he improved to 5-3-1 for the season while also recording his fifth shutout. Melchor fell to 4-5-0 with the loss while making eight saves.

The Knights outshot the Dolphins 25-10 and had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Arcadia will next travel to Stevenson University Saturday for a 7 p.m. Commonwealth Conference match. It will be the first conference game of the season for both teams.
