Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Canfield’s hat-trick leads women’s soccer to 7-0 win over Alvernia, Knights clinch playoff berth

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Senior midfielder Kim Canfield scored a season-high three goals to lead the Arcadia University women's soccer team to a 7-0 Commonwealth Conference victory over visiting Alvernia University Tuesday night at Easton Field.

Canfield now has 31 career goals, which is the third-most in program history, moving her past Samantha Calhoun (30; 2005-08) and Melanie Schlack (29; 1996-99). She now has 91 career points, which is the third-highest total in program history and just three back of Meghan Smyth's (1999-2002) second-place total of 94 career points.

The Knights improved to 13-3-0 overall and 4-1-0 in Commonwealth Conference play with their fifth consecutive shutout victory, and clinched a berth in the upcoming Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament. The Crusaders fell to 5-12-0 overall and 1-4-0 in conference play with their sixth straight loss.

Canfield opened the scoring 15 minutes into the game when she placed a ball into the top right corner from inside the six off a pass from sophomore midfielder Lennon Kramer. Her second goal of the game came in the 51st minute on a shot from the middle of the box off a center feed from sophomore forward Karis Poore. That combo connected again in the 68th minute as Poore sent a pass across the face of the goal and Canfield tapped it in at the left post.

Kramer scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the 18th minute as she chipped home her own rebound. She is now tied for fifth on the career goals list with Schlack at 29 each, while her 65 career points place her eighth on the all-time scoring list.

Poore gave Arcadia a 3-0 lead at the half after streaking down the right side of the field and depositing her shot inside the right post for her sixth tally of the year in the 21st minute.

Junior back Melia Ochsner turned and fired a shot into the back of the net from just outside the left corner of the box to open the second half scoring with her third of the year. Junior forward/midfielder Jackie Glanfield capped the scoring in the 72nd minute with a shot from the right corner of the box that found its way into the goal for her sixth tally of the season off a pass from Poore for her third assist of the night.

Senior keeper Veronica Willig and freshman keeper Natalie Toner combines on the shutout for the Knights. Willig earned the decision without facing a shot on goal in the first half, improving her record to 11-3-0 for the season. Toner stopped both shots on goal she faced in the second half.

Freshman keeper Jessica Plunkett fell to 4-7-0 after recording 17 saves for Alvernia, which was outshot 31-4 in the game.

The Knights will look to extend their winning streak Saturday when they host a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference match against Lebanon Valley College. The two teams will enter the match tied for third in the conference standings with 12 points each.
