Fourth-seeded women’s soccer routs fifth-seeded Albright 5-1 in conference tournament opener

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The fourth-seeded Arcadia University women's soccer team registered a 5-1 victory over fifth-seeded Albright College in the first round of the 2014 Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament Monday night at Easton Field.

The Knights improved to 15-5-0 will next travel to top-seeded Stevenson University Wednesday for a 7 p.m. conference semifinal match. The Mustangs edged Arcadia 1-0 in overtime back on October 4 after being awarded a penalty kick with 56 seconds left in the extra period.

Arcadia never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute as sophomore forward/midfielder Lennon Kramer headed the ball in at the left post of a corner kick from senior midfielder Kim Canfield. Canfield then sent a lead pass to junior forward Jenna Mirabelli who broke through the Albright defense and beat Lions' (7-11-1) freshman keeper Emily Sears for what proved to be the game-winner.

It was the first goal of the season for Mirabelli, who added an assist in the second half on sophomore forward Karis Poore's breakaway goal in 73rd minute. Her seventh goal of the season was the first of three scored by the Knights in a span of just under five minutes.

Sophomore midfielder Jackie Glanfield tipped home senior midfielder Nina Barbnieri's cross from outside the top-left corner of the box at the right post for her seventh goal of the year in the 75th minute. Kramer then capped the scoring in the 78th minute after ripping a shot from outside the top of the box that was out of the reach of a diving Sears for her team-leading 14th goal of the season.

Albright's lone goal of the match was scored by sophomore forward Emily Sousa in the 31st minute. She placed a shot from the right side of the box into the upper-left corner for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Sears finished with 16 saves in net.

Shots in the game were 35-5 in favor of Arcadia, which also owned a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.

Kramer is now tied with Canfield for third on the career goals scored list with 31, and moved into a tie for seventh on the all-time scoring list with 69 career points. Melanie Schlak totaled 69 points (29 goals, 11 assists) from 1996-99.

Canfield now has 93 career points (31 goals, 31 assists), placing her one back of Meghan Smyth for second on the all-time scoring list. Smyth totaled 94 points (39 goals, 16 assists) from 1999-2002. Canfield's 13 assists this season are the second-most in a single season at Arcadia. Current assistant coach Maria DeGeorge Kosmin totaled a school-record 15 assists in 2002.

Senior keeper Veronica Willig improved to 14-5-0 for the season with tonight's victory, and is now tied with Jackie Law and Michelle Leone for most wins in a single season. Law went 14-2-3 in 2009 and 14-4-1 in 2010, while Leone was 14-4-3 in 2007.
