Women’s basketball falters in second half against Stevenson

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Visiting Stevenson University closed the game with a 17-2 run over the final five and a half minutes to defeat the Arcadia University women's basketball team 67-60 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Mustangs improved to 4-2 overall with their Commonwealth Conference-opening win, while the loss dropped the Knights to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The loss also snapped Arcadia's five-game winning streak.

The Knights led for most of the game and were up eight, 58-50, following a layup from junior guard Maureen Fiocca with 5:47 to go, but managed just one basket the rest of the way. Stevenson scored 13 straight before junior forward grabbed the rebound off a missed jumper from junior guard Dominique Hassinger and laid it in to pull Arcadia within three, 63-60 with 27.7 seconds on the clock.

The Knights were then forced to put the Mustangs at the line and hope for missed free throws, but senior guards Kayleigh Guzek and Ty Bender combined to go 4 for 4 at the line in the closing seconds to secure the come-from-behind win for Stevenson.

Senior guard/forward Megan Fox scored 13 points with eight boards in the first half for Arcadia, but was held to just two points in the second as she finished the game with a team-best 15 points. Fiocca scored 14 points, while DiMuro closed the contest with eight points and 10 boards. Junior forward Rachel Jacob had a strong game off the bench, scoring nine points and pulling down five rebounds.

Guzek scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the second half. She went 6 of 9 from the field with four threes and was 4 for 4 at the line in the game. Sophomore forward Sara Tarbert registered a double-double for the Mustangs with 16 points and a game-high 13 boards. Bender also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points with five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Stevenson shot 30 percent (24-61) from the field, 40 percent (6-15) from three and 59 percent (13-22) at the line. Arcadia also shot 39 percent (23-59) from the field while going 21 percent (3-14) from three and 79 percent (11-14) at the line. The Mustangs had a decisive 26-12 advantage in bench scoring thanks to the 20-point performance by Guzek, while the Knights had the edge in points in the paint (32-24) and second chance scoring (14-10).

Arcadia will look to get back on track next Saturday, December 13, when it hosts a 1 p.m. non-conference game against Immaculata University.
