Softball falls to Penn State-Harrisburg, defeats Mount Aloysius to open 2014 season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, Fla. – The Arcadia University softball team went 1-1 in its first day of the 2014 season, falling to Penn State-Harrisburg 17-1 in five innings before shutting out Mount Aloysius College 4-0.

Senior Jessica Wood (Columbus, N.J.) drove in the only two runs the Knights would need against Mount Aloysius in the top of the first with a two-run blast that also scored junior Jessica Shotwell (Winstead, Conn.), who walked to lead off the inning. Arcadia tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the fifth on senior Leanda Helms' (Topton, Pa.) bases-loaded single to left that pushed across Shotwell and sophomore Nicole Larro (Cedarville, N.J.).

Those four runs were more than enough for sophomore Erin Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa.), who scattered six hits while fanning nine batters to earn the complete-game shutout victory in the pitcher's circle. Junior Kelsey Ickes (Claysburg, Pa.) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits and seven walks while fanning five for the Mounties.

The Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first against Penn State-Harrisburg when Shotwell scored from third as sophomore Sarah Gunia (East Brunswick., N.J.) grounded out to third, but that lead didn't last long as the Lions exploded for 11 runs in the bottom half of the frame. Harrisburg added three runs in the second and third innings for the 17-1 final.

Sophomore Keriann Saich (Hershey, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs in the first with a single to right and classmate Rieley Loch (Madison Township, Pa.) launched a three-run homer later in the frame, the first of three long balls for Harrisburg on the day. Junior Gabrielle Wolfe (New Milford, Pa.) added a two-run homer in the second and sophomore Jackie Furch (Hallstead, Pa.) ripped a three-run homer in the third.

Arcadia had other chances to score in the game, but stranded runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth innings.

Wolfe picked up the victory in the pitcher's circle after allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and five walks in five innings for the Lions, and was 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored. Furch finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Wood took the loss for the Knights after allowing nine runs and failing to get an out in the first. Gunia allowed eight runs in four innings of relief.

Arcadia will be back in action Tuesday when the Knights take on SUNYIT at 9:30 a.m. and NCAA Division II Bemidji State University at 11:30 a.m. in Myrtle Beach.
