Softball Team Edges Eastern 3-2 in Game-One, Blanked in Game-Two 3-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Eastern University Tuesday at Blankley Field, taking game-one 3-2 before getting shutout in game-two 3-0. The Knights are now 16-18 for the season, while the Eagles record now stands at 14-17.

Eastern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game-one on freshman Michelle Stehman's (Phoenixville, Pa.) RBI-single to shortstop, but Arcadia answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead for good.

Sophomore Erin Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa.) scored to tie the game as senior Jessica Wood (Columbus, N.J.) drew a two-out bases-loaded walk, and senior Leanda Helms (Topton, Pa.) put the Knights when her double down the left field line scored junior Jessica Shotwell (Winsted, Conn.) and sophomore Nicole Larro (Cedarville, N.J.). Wood was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play.

The Eagles got one run back when sophomore Kasey Williams (Strasburg, Pa.) sent a two-out bases-loaded single up the middle to plate freshman Kelsey Clever (Red Lion, Pa.) from third, cutting Arcadia's lead to 3-2. Wilson then got freshman Haleigh Williams (Royersford, Pa.) to strike out swinging to end the threat.

Wilson improved to 9-6 after allowing two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in seven innings for the Knights. It was her 10th complete game of the season. Larro had the only multi-hit performance for Arcadia, going 2-for-3 with a run scored

Freshman Alyssa Welsh (Woodbury Heights, N.J.) fell to 5-11 with the loss for Eastern after allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts in six innings. Stehman and Kasey Williams were both 2-for-4 with an RBI in the game.

Game-two was scoreless until the Eagles plated three runs in the top of the seventh. Freshman Karlee Kerchersky (Cherry Hill, N.J.) scored from third on a squeeze play to give Eastern the lead, and two more runs scored on an error before classmate Ashton Tomlinson (Millsboro, Del.) was thrown out at second to end the inning.

Arcadia had its chances to score, but stranded a pair of runners in the fourth and left the bases loaded in the sixth. The Knights also left runners in scoring position on two other occasions, and senior Amanda Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.) was thrown out at the plate after sending a triple to center and then trying to score after the throw into third got away.

Haleigh Williams earned the shutout victory after scattering six hits and two walks over seven innings to improve to 2-3.

Sophomore Sarah Gunia (East Brunswick, N.J.) fell to 6-9 after allowing three unearned runs on four hits while striking out five.

The Knights will return to action Thursday when they travel to Wesley College for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
