Softball Sweeps Hood to Close Regular Season, 11-0 and 8-2

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FREDERICK, Md. – The Arcadia University softball team closed out the 2014 regular season by sweeping a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Hood College Saturday, taking game-one 11-0 before posting a 8-2 victory in game-two.

Sophomore starting pitcher Erin Wilson (Bethlehem, Pa.) picked up her 11th win of the season in a dominant performance in game-one for the Knights, tossing a one-hitter and walking only one batter, while striking out ten in her complete game. The only hit she allowed came in the second inning with one out and the only walk came in the fifth inning. The complete game shutout also lowered her ERA sub-2.00 to a mark of 1.85 in 113.1 innings on the year so far.

Arcadia struck first in the game in the second inning after sophomore Sarah Gunia (East Brunswick, N.J.) reached on a fielder's choice that scored senior Jessica Wood (Columbus, N.J.).

The Knights then exploded for five runs in the next inning after sophomore Nicole Larro (Cedarville, N.J.) singled up the middle for an RBI and Wood followed suit a few batters later for an RBI of her own. A wild pitch allowed sophomore Sara Boyadjis (Cedar Knolls, N.J.) to touch home and senior Leanda Helms (Topton, Pa.) belted a two-run homer to left field to give the Knights a comfortable 6-0 lead.

They would score another in the sixth inning followed by four more in the seventh to make it the game's final score. Nine Knights recorded hits in the ballgame with Gunia leading the team with a three-hit performance to go along with two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore Natalie O'Reilly (Honesdale, Pa.) also chipped in with two hits and two RBI, while Wilson helped out her own cause contributing two hits at the plate.

For Hood, sophomore Keerstie Robinson (Windsor, Pa.) suffered the loss, falling to 7-10 on the season, after allowing all 11 runs on 13 hits and two walks in the complete game.

Game-two was a little more back and forth for the first couple of innings. Arcadia struck first again, putting up the first run of the game in the first inning after junior Jessica Shotwell (Winsted, CT) scored from third because of a wild pitch.

Hood responded right back in their half of the inning, overcoming the one-run deficit to take a one-run lead. Senior Jennifer Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa.) got on by way of a one-out single and then sophomore Ashley Fourcade (Rockville, Md.) smashed a two-run homerun to give the Blazers their only runs of the game.

In the top of the second, sophomore Alicia McMahon was able to score and tie up the game because of an error from the catcher, and then because of another wild pitch, senior Ashley John (Columbus, N.J.) crossed home to retake the lead which would be all the Knights needed for the victory.

Arcadia added another three in the third because of a McMahon RBI-single and Gunia added another RBI single to go up three. The Knights drew the bases loaded and senior Amanda Tomaschek (Toms River, N.J.) drew an RBI-walk to score McMahon.

In the top of the seventh, Wood led off the inning with her second homerun of the year to make it 7-2 and Tomaschek singled to center later on in the inning to score McMahon once again to make it the final score of 8-2 as Gunia shut the door on Hood in the bottom half of the seventh to seal the victory.

Gunia (7-10) went the distance in the win, scattering six hits and a walk while just giving up two runs. For the Blazers, freshman Kristin Ganderton (Maple Glen, Pa.) picked up the loss, also tossing a complete game but surrendering eight runs on 13 hits and a walk in seven innings of work.

Five Knights recorded a multi-hit game, with McMahon leading the team with a 3-for-4 performance in game-two with an RBI and three runs scored. Between both games, McMahon went 4-for-8 at the plate with four runs scored and an RBI. Larro, Wood, Gunia, and John each had two hits in game-two and combined for four runs scored and three RBI.

With the sweep today, Arcadia has clinched the No. 5 seed for the Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament and will play Alvernia University Saturday at 10 a.m. at Alvernia, the tournament's predetermined location.
