Women’s soccer team blanks No. 9 Misericordia, 1-0

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University women's soccer team registered a 1-0 non-conference victory over Misericordia University Saturday afternoon at Easton Field.

The Knights improved to 8-2-0 with the win, while the Cougars, who are ranked ninth in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Coaches' Poll, fell to 6-2-0 with the loss.

Sophomore forward/midfielder Karis Poore scored the lone goal of the match with 7:15 remaining in the first half, taking a lead pass from senior forward/midfielder Kim Canfield and breaking through the Misericordia defense for a breakaway. Junior keeper Maureen Ciccosanti ran out to challenge Poore, who ripped a shot into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. The assist for Canfield was her Commonwealth Conference-leading eighth of the season.

The Cougars picked up the pace from there and dominated in terms of time of possession and scoring chances the remainder of the game, but were unable to score on senior keeper Veronica Willig, who made seven saves behind a defense that allowed very few quality scoring chances.

Senior forward Megan Mahoney nearly tied the match with five minutes left in the first half off a corner kick, but Poore was there at the left post to stop her scoring bid for the team save. Mahoney was in close again two minutes later, but each of her three shot attempts were blocked in front of Willig before freshman forward Sarah Buchanan's attempt sailed over the net.

The Cougars best chance of the second half was junior forward Megan Antrim's one-on-one with Willig seven minutes into the frame. She ripped a shot from the top of the box that was caught by Willig as she came out to challenge.

Willig improved to 7-2-0 this season while recording her third shutout. Ciccosanti fell to 5-2-0 with the loss while allowing one goal, just her third of the season, while making two saves in 59:28. Freshman Alyssa Pojero made one stop in the final 30:32.

The ball stayed in Arcadia's defensive half of the field for most of the second half, which saw Misericordia outshoot the Knights 10-2. The final shot totals favored the Cougars, 24-7. Of those 24 shots, only eight were on goal.

Arcadia will next travel to Stevenson University October 4 to open Commonwealth Conference play. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
