Men’s basketball team’s winning streak snapped with 66-56 setback at Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Arcadia University men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to an end after suffering a 66-56 loss at Alvernia University Wednesday night in a Commonwealth Conference contest.
 
The Crusaders improved to 10-8 for the season and earned a split of the season series with the win, while the Knights fell to 10-9 with the loss. The two teams are now tied for third in the conference standings at 6-4.
 
The game was tied at 23 after junior guard John Landro knocked down a jumper with three minutes left in the first half before freshman guard Mike Miller drained a three with 1:40 left in the opening frame to give Alvernia the lead for good. Miller's jumper in the final minute of the first half put the Crusaders up 28-25 at the break and hit a pair of threes as part of an eight-point run that put Alvernia up 41-30 eight minutes into the second half.
 
A jumper from senior forward Joe Brown followed by a three from senior guard Torrell Candelaria brought the Knights back within six, 47-41, with seven minutes to go, but back-to-back triples from junior guard Charles Cooper and freshman guard Alex Shippen followed to extend the Crusaders' advantage to a game-high 12 points with 5:31 to go and it remained at least a three-possession game the rest of the way.
 
Brown finished with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Arcadia, while freshman guard Sean Mayberry netted 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting off the bench. Candelaria added 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field and the line with a par of threes, while senior center Jose Figueroa fell just short of a double-double with 10 points and eight boards.
 
Miller poured in a game-high 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field with a 6-for-12 performance from three to lead Alvernia, while senior center Harrison Deyo netted 12 points with nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Cooper also finished in double figures with 10 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
 
The Crusaders shot 47 percent (23-49) from the field and 41 percent (9-22) from three, while the Knights shot 40 percent (21-52) from the floor and just 21 percent (3-13) from downtown. Both teams were 11-of-16 at the line.
 
Arcadia will look to bounce back Saturday when it travel o Stevenson University for a 1 p.m. Commonwealth Conference contest. The Mustangs (13-5, 6-3 CC) currently sit in second place in the conference standings, just a half-game ahead of the Knights.
