Longenecker’s Hat Trick Leads Field Hockey Team to 4-1 Win over Alvernia; Wolfe Breaks Assist Record

GLENSIDE, Pa. – Senior Rachel Longenecker scored three goals, including the game-winner in the second half, to lift the Arcadia University field hockey team to a 4-1 MAC Commonwealth victory over visiting Alvernia University Wednesday night at Easton Field.

Senior Debbie Wolfe assisted on all four goals in the match, setting a new program record for assists in a single game. She now has a team-best 11 for the season, trying her first third on the all-time single-season assists list.

The previous record for assists in a game was three set by Amy Kerstetter in 1998. Michelle Basciani also totaled 11 assists in 2003; the program record for assists in a season is 17, set by Marilyn Beatty in 2012.

The Knights (6-10, 1-4 MACC) took a 1-0 lead at halftime following Longenecker's first goal of the game, which saw her tip home classmate Debbie Wolfe's shot off a corner. Summer Liberto knotted the game at 1-1 six minutes into the second half off a cross from Margaret Wentzel, but it was all Arcadia from there as the Knights scored three unanswered goals, all in a span of 7:05, for the 4-1 final.

Longenecker scored the game-winner just two minutes after Liberto tied the score, and then capped the scoring seven minutes later with her team-leading 11th tally of the season. Senior Tess Brzezynski added her seventh goal of the season in the middle of that fray, lifting the ball over the top of the defense off a corner.

Junior Brittany Hodson totaled six saves to pick up the win in goal, improving her record to 6-7 for the season. Rebecca Brosious totaled five saves while taking the loss for the Crusaders (9-6, 2-3 MACC)

The Knights will return to action Saturday, hosting a MAC Commonwealth match against Hood Collehe that starts at noon at Easton Field.
