GLENSIDE, Pa. – Freshman
Danny Riley scored his fifth goal of the game midway through the second overtime period to give the Arcadia University men's lacrosse team a thrilling 11-10 victory over visiting Rosemont College Saturday at Easton Field, marking the first career victory for head coach
Nick Taylor.
The Knights (1-1) led 4-3 through the first two quarters, going ahead on freshman
Sean McDonald's first goal of the season with 1:06 remaining in the first half, and scored four of the first five second half goals to build an 8-4 advantage off freshman
Ryan Green's first goal of the year 30 seconds in the fourth quarter. The Ravens (0-2) responded with a four goal run to tie the game at 8-8 midway through the fourth, with three of those markers coming off the stick of junior Ralph Ibezim.
Arcadia regained the lead twice from there only to see Rosemont come back and tie the game, going ahead 9-8 on Riley's fourth goal with just under six minutes to go in the quarter and later going up 10-9 on McDonald's second goal of the game with 1:26 left in the frame. Sophomore Rasool Smith tied the game at nine, while sophomore Anthony Bottoms' scored a man-up with 1:01 left in regulation to tie the game at 10 and force overtime. The Knights went a man down after being called for their third faceoff violation immediately following McDonald's tally.
Both teams had chances to end the game in the first overtime, but were unable to get the game-winner. Sophomore
Joe Stanton picked the top-right corner only to have the ball ring off the pipe, midway through the first OT, and freshman
Ryan Donovan had what looked to be the game-winner waived off as time expired when Arcadia was called for being offside. Junior Stephen Licata got a pair of good looks for the Ravens, but both attempts sailed wide of the cage.
Rosemont won the opening faceoff of the second overtime and was able to maintain possession in the offensive end until freshman
Steve McCrossin forced Ibezim into a turnover and sophomore
Casey Fayan was able to pick the ball up for the Knights. After clearing the ball Stanton handed the ball off to Riley at the top of the box and he ripped a shot from about 15 yards out just under the crossbar to win the game in dramatic fashion for Arcadia.
Riley scored a game-high five goals and assisted on two others to go with three ground balls and three caused turnovers, while McDonald finished the game with two goals and two assists. Sophomore
Jordan Culichia picked up the win in goal after allowing eight goals with 13 saves in 58:23, while classmate
Ryan O'Leary allowed two goals with one stop in 7:39 played in the fourth quarter.
Ibezim also finished with five goals to lead Rosemont, while Bottoms and Licata both had one goal and one assist. Sophomore Kiefer Paul went the distance in goal, totaling nine saves.
The Ravens outshot the Knights 38-29 and won 16 of 24 faceoffs in the game, while Arcadia had a 31-22 advantage in ground balls. Rosemont was 2 for 6 with the extra attacker, while the Knights were unable to cash in on their five man-up opportunities.
Arcadia will return to action Wednesday when it hosts a 7 p.m. non-conference game against Gwynedd Mercy University at Easton Field.
