MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Arcadia University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with SUNY Canton Sunday at the Ripken Experience, taking game one 3-1 before falling in game two 5-0. The Knights are now 5-1 for the season, while the Kangaroos are now 4-9.
Canton scored its only run of game one on an error in the top of the first as sophomore
Michael Ferrence allowed just two hits with three strikeouts in 6.1 innings to pick up his first win of the season. Senior
Jonah Van Bemmelen recorded the final two outs to earn first save of the year.
Arcadia drew even in the bottom of the first when senior
Andonis Yiantsos placed junior
Nick Todero from third with a sacrifice fly to center, and then took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the bottom of the third. Senior
Tom Wagner scored on a double steal to give the Knights the lead before Todero crossed the plate for the second time in the game on junior
Michael Nessel's single to left.
Canton was able to load the bases with one out in the top of the seventh and final frame, but Van Bemmelen got junior Chris Roenbeck to ground out to second to end the game.
Todero was 2 for 3 with two runs scored for Arcadia, while Nessel was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Yiantsos was 2 for 2 with an RBI.
The Roos plated four runs in the bottom of the second in game two, all with two outs in the frame. Sophomore Christian Nazario-Cruz and freshman Wilson Matos both drove in a run with back-to-back singles to center before sophomore Jeremy Baez drove in both of them with a double to left. Baez later scored his second run of the game on a sac-fly in the fifth for the 5-0 final.
Arcadia had a number of scoring opportunities, but stranded a pair of runner on base three times in the game.
Senior Dom Delberti earned the decision for Canton after scattering five hits over five innings. Junior
Joseph Warren took the loss after giving up four runs in 1.2 innings.
The Knights will close out their southern trip Tuesday against Benedict College at the Ripken Experience.
