MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Arcadia University softball team was finally able to open its 2015 campaign Sunday, dropping a 2-1 nail-biter to Salem College at the Snowbird Softball Classic. The Spirit improved to 6-4-2 with the win.
The game was scoreless until the top of the seventh when Salem pushed a pair of runs across the plate. Junior Kierston Garner drove in freshman Jennifer Vitarelli with a single to left before classmate Brianna Morris drove in fellow freshman Hannah Ogle with a single to right for the eventual game-winning run.
The Knights cut their deficit in half when junior
Erin Wilson scored from second on an error at shortstop and had runners on first and second with two away before junior Sarah Boyadjis flied out to right to end the game.
Sophomore Lauryn Smith improved to 3-2 after allowing one unearned run while fanning seven batters in the game. Wilson took the loss in her first appearance of the season after allowing two runs on three hits and a walk.
Arcadia will next take on SUNY Morrisville and Southern Vermont College Monday at the Snowbird Softball Classic.
