Softball Rolls past Morrisville 17-1 for Norris’ First Career Win, Falls to No. 11 Virginia Wesleyan 3-0

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – First-Year head coach Sarah Norris recorded her first victory as a collegiate head coach as the Arcadia University softball team handily defeated SUNY Morrisville (0-1) 17-1 in five innings Monday morning at the Snowbird Softball Classic. The Knights (1-2) then dropped a 3-0 decision to 11th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College (10-2).

Arcadia scored three times in the first, five times in the second and nine times in the third to open a 17-0 lead against Morrisville.

Junior Alicia McMahon was a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with two doubles, four RBI and a run scored, while classmate Sara Boyadjis went 3 for 4 with a double, four RBI and three runs scored. Junior Nicki Larro was 3 for 4 with a pair of doubles, three runs scored and two runs driven in, while sophomore Samantha Quigley was 1 for 2 with three runs scored, including a solo homer to center field to lead off the bottom of the second.

That run support was more than enough for sophomore Laura Christine, who allowed one run while scattering seven hits over five innings to record her first career victory in the pitcher's circle. She fanned four batters with no walks in the game.

The Mustangs broke up Christine's shutout bid in the top of the fifth. They loaded the bases with one away in the inning, which allowed sophomore Liz Miller to score from third as classmate Brianna Martin was put out at third off a fielder's choice to shortstop for the second out of the inning. Sophomore Beth Marr then grounded out to first to end the game.

Arcadia's second game of the day was a much different story as senior Kristina Karagiorgis tossed a no-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts for nationally ranked Virginia Wesleyan, improving her record to 3-2 for the season. Junior Erin Wilson fell to 0-2 for the Knights after allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks against what might be Arcadia's toughest opponent of the season.

The Marlins scored the only run they would need in the top of the third. Wilson threw a wild pitch that allowed runners to advance from first and second with one out in the frame, setting up a sacrifice fly for junior Kayla Dost that scored classmate Courtney Bogan and moved fellow junior Taylor Galvin to third. Wilson then fanned freshman Cassety Howerin to end the frame.

Virginia Wesley added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh for the 3-0 final. Sophomore Elizabeth Bailey drove a triple to right field that scored junior Brittney Jackson from first, and then scored on freshman Amy Large's sac-fly to center.

Arcadia will next take on Rutgers-Camden Tuesday morning at the Snowbird Softball Classic.
