Softball Can’t Hang On After Fast Start, Falls to Rutgers-Newark 11-5

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Arcadia University softball team staked itself to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but was unable to hang on as Rutgers-Newark scored 11 unanswered runs to take an 11-5 victory Tuesday at the Snowbird Softball Classic.

The Knights (1-3) got on the board when junior Sara Boyadjis crossed the plate on classmate Alicia McMahon's double to left, and sophomore Samantha Quigley drew a bases-loaded walk to plate junior Nicki Larro to make it 2-0. McMahan then scored on a sac-fly, while Quigley and junior Erin Wilson scored on a two-out error at second to go up 5-0.

The Scarlet Raiders got three runs back in the bottom of the second, which saw freshman Kelly Yusko drive a lead-off homer over the left field fence and classmate Maria Rayfield drive in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single to center. Rutgers-Newark scored three more times in the fourth, taking lead on sophomore Anna Carlson's RBI-single to center that scored freshman Sam Held from third.

Yusko pushed across two more runs with a bases-loaded single to left as part of a three-run fifth, and freshman Kayla Gallo capped the scoring in the game after crossing the plate from third on freshman Morgan Walizer's ground out to second.

Arcadia had multiple chances to score following that five-run first inning, but stranded 10 runners on base and seven runners in scoring position. The Knights had a runner on third with two away four times in the game, but couldn't get a timely hit to score the run.

The Knights will look to get back on track Wednesday when they take on Sarah Lawrence College and SUNY Morrisville.
