CHESTER, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team managed just four hits as it dropped a 13-0 Commonwealth Conference decision at Widener University Monday, marking the first of three games this season with the Pride. Widener improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in conference play with the win, while the Knights fell to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league action.
Each of the Pride's first three batters reached base to load them up in the bottom of the first before senior Matt Scherer delivered a single to left that drove in sophomore Bob Barnett with the only run Widener would need in the game. Senior Michael Rytelewski then scored from third as sophomore Nicholas Enos grounded into a double play to cap the scoring in the inning.
The bases were loaded again for the Pride with two down in the bottom of the fifth, which saw Enos draw a bases loaded walk that forced Rytelewski home, and sophomore Michael Elfreth followed with a two-run single that put Widener ahead 6-0. The Pride then pulled away with four runs in the sixth and three more runs in the eighth.
Arcadia was able to put runners in scoring position throughout the game, but the Widener pitching staff was able to work its way out of each of those innings with no harm done.
Sophomore Greg McDonough was 2 for 3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored for the Pride, while Rytelewski finished the day 1 for 3 with three runs scored. Senior Robert Barth scattered three hits with 10 strikeouts over eight innings of work to improve his record to 1-2 for the season.
Junior
Michael Nessel took the loss for the Knights after allowing six runs on five hits and four walks while striking out three in five innings. He was 2 for 4 with a double at the plate. Senior
Justin Simpson was 1 for 3, while junior
Nick Todero went 1 for 4.
Arcadia will next host its first game of the season at Erny Field Wednesday against 17th-ranked Misericordia University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
