Softball Swept in Conference-Opening Doubleheader at Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team dropped a pair Commonwealth Conference games at Widener University Tuesday, falling in game-one 10-6 before being edged 4-3 in game-two. It was the conference-opener for both teams.
 
The two teams traded runs early in the game, with the Knights (5-5) tying the game at 5-5 after scoring twice in the top of the third. Junior Alicia McMahon scored from second on freshman Amanda Hess' single to right to pull Arcadia back within one, and junior Erin Wilson tied the game as sophomore Samantha Quigley grounded out to short for the second out of the inning. Junior Natalie O'Reilly then grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning, stranding Hess at third with the go-ahead run.
 
The Pride (7-1) took the lead for good with a five-run fourth to go up 10-5. Senior Carissa Harris drove in junior Alie Alkins with a single to right to give Widener the lead and then scored on an error with the eventual game-winning run. RBI-singles off the bats of sophomore Liz Antonucci and junior Taylor Church and a passed ball accounted for three more runs in the frame.
 
Arcadia put together a scoring threat in the sixth, but managed just one run when junior Sarah Gunia drove in freshman Nicole Iasiello with a two-out double to left, which also advanced freshman Tori Zaccaria to third. Wilson got on base with one away in the seventh after driving a single through the left side of the infield before sophomore Ally Horvath struck out Hess and Quigley to end the game.
 
Sophomore Alexis Schengrund improved to 4-0 in the circle despite giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits in six innings of work for the Pride. Wilson fell to 2-3 for the Knights after getting touched up for 10 runs, only four of which were earned, on 11 hits in six innings.
 
Horvath was 3 for 4 with a run scored in addition to closing out the game in the pitcher's circle, while Harris was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and one driven in. Antonucci was 1 also 1 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored.
 
Gunia was 2 for 4 with a double, one RBI and one run scored for Arcadia, while Wilson was also 2 for 4 with a run scored. Quigley was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
 
Widener took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first in game-two as Harris drove in Horvath with a single to right before coming around to cross the plate on Junior Heather Forward's single through the left side. Sophomore Angela Hood later drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single through the left side that Anronucci and freshman Lauren DelRomano that eventually won the game for the Pride.
 
The Knights led 3-2 after scoring three times in top of the second. Sophomore Laura Christine drove in Quigley with a two-out RBI-single to center and then score on Zaccaria's two-run homer to left.
 
Arcadia had other chances to score in the game, including putting the game-tying run on second with no outs in the top of the seventh, but was unable to score outside of the second inning.

Horvath improved to 3-1 in the circle after giving up three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in the complete-game win. Antonucci was 2 for 3 with a run scored in game-two, while Hood was 1 for 4 with a pair of RBI.
 
Christine took the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in 3 and two-third innings, dropping her record to 1-1. She was 1 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored.
 
The Knights will look to bounce back quickly as they travel to Stevenson University Wednesday for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader.
