READING, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team split a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader at Albright College Thursday, taking game-one 3-2 in eight innings before falling 2-0 in game-two.
The Knights (8-10, 1-7 CC) went up 2-0 in the top of the fourth in game one as junior
Alicia McMahon drove in classmates
Erin Wilson and
Nicki Larro with a single to right, but the Lions (9-4, 3-3 CC) answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single off the bat of Junior Morgan Cullen to tie the game.
Both team stranded a runner in the seventh to send the game to extra innings, which saw junior
Sarah Gunia reach base on an error to lead off the top of the eighth and later score on another error with the game-winning run. Wilson then sent Albright down in order in the bottom half of the frame to secure the win for Arcadia.
Wilson went the distance in the game in the pitchers circle, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters to improve her record to 3-5. She also had the only multi-hit game, going 2 for 2 with a double and a run scored.
Freshman Riley Gerenda, the reigning Commonwealth Conference Pitcher of the Week, fell to 5-1 with her first loss of the season, allowing three unearned runs while striking out seven over eight innings.
The Lions scored the only run they would need in the top of the first as freshman Brianne Long scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the frame. They added an insurance run on classmate Armida Roman's RBI-single that found its way through the left side of the infield with two away in the bottom of the third.
That proved to be plenty of offense for junior Sammi O'Connor, who struck out six batters while recording a two-hit shutout that improved her record to 4-3 on the season. Sophomore
Laura Christine took the loss for the Knights after allowing two runs on six hits, dropping her record to 3-3.
Arcadia is next scheduled to take on Rutgers-Camden April 9 starting at 6 p.m. at Blankley Field.
