RADNOR, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Cabrini College Tuesday, taking game-one 7-5 before its comeback bid in gam-two fell just short as the Knights lost 11-10. Arcadia is now 14-20 for the season, while the Cavaliers' record moved to 20-8.
Game-one was scoreless until the top of the third when junior
Nicki Larro drove in senior
Jessica Shotwell with a two-out, bases-loaded single to center, giving Arcadia a 1-0 lead. Cabrini tied it in the bottom of the fourth, but the Knights were quickly back on top after freshman
Amanda Hess drove in Shotwell and junior
Sarah Gunia with a one-out single to center field in the top of the fifth to give Arcadia a 3-1 advantage.
The Cavaliers answered by pushing four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth, which saw Lindsay Savar launch a three-run homerun over the right field fence to give Cabrini a short lived 5-3 advantage.
Junior
Erin Wilson led off the top of the sixth with a solo homer to left to pull Arcadia back within one, and Gunia gave the Knights the lead for good after driving in freshman
Tori Zaccaria and Shotwell with a two-out single to right. Gunia then stole second and moved to third on an error before crossing the plate on Hess' single through the left side for the 7-5 final.
Gunia was 1 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored in game-one, while Hess finished 2 for 4 with three runs driven in. Shotwell was also 3 for 4 and scored three times from the leadoff spot. Wilson improved to 6-10 in the circle despite getting touched up for five runs on nine hits in the game.
Cabrini scored four times in the bottom of the first in game-two to go up 4-1, and would never relinquish the lead. The Cavaliers added another run in the second on Kaityn Cooper's solo shot to left before the two teams exchanged three-run innings in the fourth that made the game 9-4. Cabrini tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Sarah Beckner scoring what proved to be the game-winning run on an error with two down in the inning.
The Knights came storming back with a four-run sixth to get back in the game. Zaccaria launched a two-run shot to right after freshman
Mackenzie Purr led off the inning with a single to left, and Hess drove in junior Sarah Boyadjis and Shotwell with a single to right that brought Arcadia back within three at 11-8.
Freshman
Kaylee Zarick made it a one-run game after driving in Purr and Zaccaria with a single to left center before being cut down at second trying to stretch out a double for the first out of the inning. Boyadjis then popped out to first before Shotwell grounded out to the shortstop to end the game.
Zaccaria finished the game 3 for 3 at the dish with one double, one homerun, two RBI and two runs scored, while Boyadjis went 1 for 4 with two RBI and one run scored. Shotwell went 2 for 4 in game-two and scored a pair of runs.
Sophomore
Laura Christine took the loss after allowing five runs on six hits in just two innings, while classmate
Megan Roynan gave up six runs on four hits and seven walks in her 2.1 innings of work. Purr was able to settle things down in the circle to give Arcadia a chance at the win, allowing just one hit in her 1.2 innings of relief.
The Knights will be back in action Thursday when the host a non-conference doubleheader against Stockton University.
