Field Hockey Shut Out by No. 7 Ursinus in Home-Opener 3-0, Hodson Ties Saves Record with 23

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University field hockey team dropped a 3-0 decision to seventh-ranked Ursinus College Thursday night at Easton Field, dropping their record to 1-1 for the season.

Junior Brittany Hodson totaled a career-high 23 saves in goal for the Knights, and in doing so tied the program record for saves in a game. Brittany Rasmussen also totaled 23 saves in a 5-0 loss at Delaware Valley College back on October 21, 2007.

The match was scoreless until Amber Steigerwalt scored on a scramble near the right post with just 24 seconds remaining in the first half to put Ursinus up 1-0 at the break, while Devin Brakel scored a pair of goals in the second half for the 3-0 final. Brakel scored her first off a drive from Steigerwalt one minute into the frame, while the second came unassisted in the 50th-minute.

Arcadia did manage to generate several quality scoring chances throughout the game seeing the ball remain in its side of the field for the majority of the contest. The Bears defense did a good job in not allowing second chance opportunities as Danielle DeSpirito recorded five saves in goal to record the shutout victory.

Ursinus held a 40-9 advantage in shots for the game, including a 22-2 advantage in the first half and an 18-7 margin in the second. Corners also favored the Bears, 23-4.

The Knights will look to bounce back on Saturday, hosting a non-conference match against Swarthmore College. Game time is set for noon at Easton Field.
