Baseball Sweeps Immaculata to Open 2016 Season, 1-0 and 10-5

ASTON, Pa. - The Arcadia University baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Immaculata University Saturday in its first two games of the 2016 season. The Knights took game-one 1-0 before taking game-two 10-5.

Game-one was scoreless until the top of the seventh, when junior Justin Chasmar scored from third on junior George Pagan's ground out to second, marking the only run of the game. That proved to be all the offense sophomore Connor Laigiae would need as he recorded a pair of hitless relief innings to pick up his first win of the season.

Mike Boulanger tossed five scoreless innings to start game-one, scattering three hits with six strikeouts. Chasmar and senior Michael Nessel were both 2 for 3 in the game.

Game-two saw Arcadia jump out in front when Nessel scored on junior George Pagan's double to center in the top of the second. That lead grew to 5-0 after the Knights scored three more runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.

The Mighty Macs battled back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five times to tie the score at 5-5. _Dempey scored on a sac fly to get things going in the inning, while Lascomb capped the scoring after going home on Wallace's double to right to knot the score at five all.

The Knights took the lead for good with a five-run sixth inning, taking the lead for good on senior Steve Zellers' two-RBI double down the left field line that scored Nessell and freshman Nick Ponente with the winning runs. Pagan scored on sophomore Drew Coisson's sac-fly, while Zellers later scored on freshman Bryan Gillen's triple to right center. Gillen crossed the plate on Todero's single to left to cap the scoring in the game.

Senior Joseph Warren got the win in game-two after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, recording a pair of strikeouts while allowing just one hit., Nessel started the game, allowing one run on two hits in four innings and going 2 for 4 with one double, one triple, and three runs scored.

Todero was 2 for 3 with one double, one triple, two runs scored and one run driven in, while Ponente was 1 for 3 with two runs scored and another driven in. Zellers was 3 for 4 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored, while Pagan was 2 for 4 with one double, one triple, two RBI and a run scored.

Shapiro took the loss for the Mighty Macs after giving up five runs in just one-third of an innings. Anderson got the start on the mound, allowing four runs on seven hits in four innings.

Arcadia will be back in action next Saturday, February 27, when they travel to Salisbury for a non-conference doubleheader.
