Baseball Wins Pair of Pitching Duels to Sweep Hood, 2-1 and 3-1

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Arcadia University baseball team won both ends of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader against visiting Hood College Saturday at Erny Field, winning game-one 2-1 before taking game-two 3-1. The Knights improved to 10-5-1 overall and 3-0 in the MAC Commonwealth, while the Blazers fell to 5-9 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

GAME ONE: Arcadia 2, Hood 1

HOW IT HAPPENED: Hood took an early 1-0 lead when Dylan Johnson scored on an error for the Blazers lone run of the game. Arcadia drew even in the bottom of the fourth as senior Michael Nessel stretched out a one-out double and scored on junior Justin Chasmar's single to center, and then took the lead in the fifth as senior Nick Todero drove in freshman Luke Hohenstein with a double down the left field line.

ON THE HILL: Senior Jason Goldberg went the distance in this one, evening his record at 1-1 after allowing one unearned run on three hits over seven innings. Jake Franke took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in his 4.1 innings of work, dropping his record to 2-1.

ARCADIA AT BAT: The Knights totaled five hits in the game, three of which were doubles. Chasmar and Todero were both 1 for 3 with an RBI, while Nessel was 1 for 3 with a run scored.

HOOD AT BAT: The Blazers had three players with one hit in the game - Drake Friend, Josh Gall, and Johnson. Friend was caught attempting to steal second in the game.

GAME TWO: Arcadia 3, Hood 1

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights never trailed in this one, going up 1-0 in the bottom of the first when junior Jordan Draude drove in Nessel with a single to left. Senior George Pagan scored what proved to be the game-winning run after crossing the plate on freshman Bryan Gillen's double to the gap in right center field, and Draude added an insurance run in the sixth as senior Connor Arsenault grounded into a double play. Gall drove in Cam Esposito with a single to center in the top of the fifth for Hood's lone run of the game. The Blazers stranded a pair of runners in that inning, and left a pair of runners on in the third.

ON THE HILL: Freshman Joel Bartoni improved to 2-0 after yielding one unearned run on five hits over his five innings of work, while junior Christopher Keesser picked up his first save of the year after allowing just one hit over his 1.2 innings of relief. Andrew Catone's record dropped to 1-2 after allowing two runs on four hits in his two-plus innings of work.

ARCADIA AT BAT: Pagan went 2 for 2 with a walk and a run scored, while Gillen was 1 for 2 with a double, a stolen base and an RBI. Draude went 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

HOOD AT BAT: Six different players had one hit each for the Blazers, all singles. Esposito was 1 for 3 with a run scored, and Gall was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

FOR THE SERIES: Draude batted .500 (5-10) in the three games against Hood, with one double, one homer, two RBI and two runs scored. Gillen batted .375 (3-8) with three doubles, two runs scored and one RBI. Arcadia's pitching staff allowed just five runs (two earned) in the three games for an outstanding 0.78 ERA over 23 innings.
