SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Arcadia University baseball team scored nine runs while collecting 12 hits in a 9-2 non-conference victory at Swarthmore College Tuesday. The Knights improved to 12-8-1 with the win, while the Garnet fell to 16-5 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after scoring three times in the first and third innings. Senior Nick
Michael Nessel and
Nick Todero had a pair of RBI singles followed by a sac fly from freshman
Nick Ponente in the first to put Arcadia ahead for good in the game. Nessel drove in another run with his double in the third before scoring on Ponente's single up the middle in the third, which also saw Todero score on an error. The Knights added three more runs over the final two innings to put the game out of reach.
Swarthmore got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Joseph Jackson launched a lead-off homer to left before David Wolfson scored on a wild pitch after reaching base with a single to right. The Garnet left the bases loaded twice in the game, leaving the sacks full in the first and seventh frames, and stranded runners on second and third in the eight.
ON THE HILL: Freshman
Zach Manasek improved to 3-0 after holding Swarthmore scoreless through his three innings of work, striking out three batters while on a limited pitch count. Sophomores
Sean Mulvey and
Mark DiBattiste, and senior
Joseph Warren combined for three scoreless innings of relief to close out the game after senior
Michael Ferrence allowed two runs over his three innings of relief. Charles Groppe fell to 4-1 with the loss for the Garnet after allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits over his three innings.
ARCADIA AT BAT: Junior
Jordan Draude went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two driven in in the game, which saw him hit his team-leading fourth homer of the season with a solo blast to left in the top of the eighth. Nessel was 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and a run scored, while Todero was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and another driven in. Junior
Justin Chasmar was also 2 for 4 on the day with a double and a run scored.
SWARTHMORE AT BAT: Wolfson was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles and a run scored, while Jackson was 1 for 4 with a solo homer. Ryan Burnett and Jackson Roberts were also 2 for 4 on the day.
