AGUADILLA, Puerto Rico – Sophomore
Mike Boulanger tossed six scoreless innings to pick up his first collegiate victory as the Arcadia University baseball team defeated Misericordia University to improve to 2-0 in pool play at the inaugural Clemente Cup Monday night. The Knights improved to 4-2 overall with the win. The Cougars, who are receiving votes in the latest D3Baseball.com poll, fell to 3-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Junior
Jordan Draude got things going with his second home run in as many days, sending a solo shot over the left field fence in the top of the first inning. The Knights scored three more times in the second, with two runners crossing the plate on senior
Nick Todero's bases-loaded single to right center after classmate
Michael Nessel scored what proved to be the game-winner on an error. It was an 8-0 game when Misericordia finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh on Vinny Annunziata's RBI-single down the left field line that scored Connor Rittenhouse from second.
ON THE HILL: Boulanger scattered five hits and two walks over six shutout innings to even his record at 1-1 for the season, working his way out of a bases-loaded jam in his final inning of work. Nessel picked up his first save of the year after allowing one run over the final three innings of the game. Tim Burek fell to 0-1 in his two appearances so far this season after giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits over four innings, while Drake Koch surrendered four runs over his two innings of work.
ARCADIA AT-BAT: Todero finished the day 3 for 5 with two RBI, while Draude was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two more driven in. Nessel was 1 for 4 with one RBI and two runs scored, while senior
Steven Zellers was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
MISERICORDIA AT-BAT: The Cougars managed seven hits on the day, all of them singles by seven individual batters. Annunziata was 1 for 2 with an RBI after entering the game in the bottom of the seventh. Chris Boroch and Jeremy DeCotis had one hit and one walk each.
MISSED OPPORTUNITIES: The two teams combined to leave 23 runners on base in the game. Arcadia left two aboard in the second and fourth innings, and left the bases loaded in the seventh. Misericordia had a number of scoring threats in the game in addition to leaving the sacks full in the sixth. The Cougars had two one with just one away in the first, third, seventh and ninth innings. They left two aboard in each of those frames.
