RINCON, Puerto Rico - The Arcadia University baseball team struck for five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back on its way to a 7-3 victory over SUNY Canton Tuesday night, improving its record to 3-0 at the inaugural Clemente Cup and 5-2 overall. The Roos fell to 3-2 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After falling behind 1-0 following Seth Douglas' RBI single to right center in the first, Arcadia struck for five runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good. Freshman
Bryan Gillen knotted the score after crossing the plate on sophomore
Justin Chasmar's sac fly and senior
Connor Arsenault followed soon after with a bases-loaded single to left that plated a pair of runs. Classmate
Steven Zellers then drove in fellow senior
Michael Nessel with what proved to be the game-winning run, and sophomore
Drew Coisson plated Arsenault with an RBI-single to left that capped the scoring in the frame.
ON THE HILL: Freshman
Joel Bartoni allowed two runs while scattering 13 hits and fanning six batters for the first win of his collegiate career, while junior
Christopher Keesser gave up one run on three hits with two strikeouts in the final two innings. Chris Lee took the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits, four walks and four hit batters in the complete-game effort, dropping his record to 0-1.
ARCADIA AT-BAT: Zellers went 2 for 3 with a sac fly for the evening, while Arsenault was 1 for 4; both had two RBI and a run scored. Coisson was 2 for 4 with one RBI, while senior
George Pagan accounted for the Knights lone extra base hit, going 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
SUNY CANTON AT-BAT: All nine Roos' batters had at least one hit in the game. Douglas finished 2 for 4 while driving in two of Canton's three runs. Jeremy Baez was 3 for 5 with an RBI, while Wilson Matos went 2 for five with one double, one triple and two runs scored.
TAKING ADVANTAGE: The Knights did an excellent job taking advantage of free bases in the first inning, as Lee walked or hit four of the first five batters he faced, each of whom came around to score in the frame. On the other hand, Canton threatened to score in almost every inning, but managed just three runs on its 16 hits and stranded 10 batters.
