Arcadia Wins Inaugural Clemente Cup with 6-5 Victory over SUNY Canton

AGUADILLA, Puerto Rico - The Arcadia University baseball team made history Wednesday night at Estadio Municipal Luis A. "Canena" Marquez as it claimed the inaugural Roberto Clemente Cup championship with a 6-5 win over SUNY Canton. The Knights improved to 4-0 on their spring break trip to Puerto Rico, and are now 6-2 overall. The Roos fell to 3-3 after falling to Arcadia for the second night in a row.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights fell behind early as three first-inning errors let to three SUNY Canton runs in the top of the frame. Arcadia responded with six straight runs in the game to go ahead for good, tying the game in the bottom of the third when senior Michael Nessel drove in two runs with his bases-loaded single up the middle, and then going ahead in the seventh when freshman Nick Ponente singled up the middle to drive in a two more runners. He then scored on a wild pitch later that inning, which proved to be the game winning run.

LATE RALLY FALLS SHORT: The Roos didn't go down quietly in this on, putting up one run in the eighth and ninth innings to make it a one-run game. SUNY Canton had runners on first and second with two away in the ninth when senior Joseph Warren got Machado to strike out swinging to end the game and give Arcadia the tournament title.

ON THE HILL: Warren improved to 2-0 for the season after allowing two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts in four innings of relief. He entered the game after freshman Zach Manasek allowed three unearned runs over his five innings of work. Travis Bigelow fell to 1-1 after giving up six runs (four earned) in his seven innings ow work for the Roos.

ARCADIA AT-BAT: Freshman Luke Hohenstein had the lone multi-hit game for the Knights, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Ponente finished 1 for 2 with one run scored and two runs driven in, while Nessel was 1 for 4 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior Justin Chasmar finished the game with one run scored and another driven in.

SUNY CANTON AT-BAT: Wilson Matos had another strong showing for the Roos, going 3 for 5 and scoring twice in the game. Jeremy Baez drove in a pair of runs, while Christian Nazario Cruz was 1 for 3 with two walks and a run scored from the leadoff spot.

STILL TO COME: The Knights are at the midway point of their spring break trip, which will resume Friday with games against Kean and SUNY Canton. Arcadia will also face New Jersey City Saturday before closing its Puerto Rico trip with a rematch against Susquehanna Sunday.
