Softball Improves to 4-0 With Wins Over Thiel and Mount Ida

Clermont, Fla. – The Arcadia University softball team moved to 4-0 following a 5-1 win over Thiel and 11-3 win over Mount Ida Tuesday night. Seniors Erin Wilson (3-0) and Sarah Gunia (1-0) picked up the wins for the Knights, while sophomores Nicole Iasiello and Amanda Hess each posted recorded four hits on the day.

Arcadia 5, Thiel 1

The Scarlet and Grey struck early as senior Sara Boyadjis, who led the game off with a walk and subsequently moved to second on a Gunia groundout, scored when fellow senior Alicia McMahon reached on a two-out error. Arcadia retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame.

In the top of the fourth inning, Iasiello reached on a one-out single to right center before advancing to second on a single to third by sophomore Kaylee Zarick two batters later. As the next batter, Boyadjis scored Iasiello with a single to right center. Theil went three up, three down in the bottom of the inning.

The Knights added insurance in the top of the seventh. Boyadjis served as the first base runner of the inning, reaching base on a one-out single through the left side. After senior Nicki Larro reached on a hit by pitch two batters later, McMahon ripped a two-RBI double to left center to plate Larro and Boyadjis. Sophomore Amanda Hess followed up with a RBI double to left field, bringing McMahon home..

Wilson picked up her third win as she tossed all seven innings, surrendering one unearned run on three hits with no walks, while striking out six.

Boyadjis went 2 for 3 at the dish and walked once, as she drove in a run and scored twice. McMahon drove in three runs and scored once as she went 1 for 3.

Arcadia 11, Mount Ida 3
The Knights went right back to work with a nightcap with the Mustangs of Mount Ida. A Kelsey Weston, one-out RBI single through the left side gave Mount Ida a 1-0 lead after one, however Arcadia would immediately respond.

Hess led off the top of the second with a double to center, and advanced to third on a fielder's choice from junior Samantha Quigley three batters later. With runners on the corners and two outs, Zarick sent a double to left center plating both runners; Zarick was brought home during the next at-bat as Boyadjis doubled to right center. Gunia sat down the Mustangs in order in the bottom of the frame striking out one and forcing a pair of ground outs.

After opening the fourth with a double to left, Quigley moved to third on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Boyadjis drew a one-out walk to put runners on the corners for Gunia. The base runners executed a double steal with Quigley going home for a 4-1 Knight lead.

One swing of the bat opened the game wide open for Arcadia. With McMahon on first following a leadoff single, launched a two-run homer run over the wall in left center.  Mount Ida got one back when Alexis Boswell crossed the plate on an error at first base.

Arcadia's bats came to life yet again in the top of the seventh as the first three Knight batters singled, first sophomore Elissa Zuczek to right center, followed by Hess on a bunt, then Iasiello through the left side. After Wilson reached on a fielder's choice, Quigley sent a two-RBI single up the middle to plate Hess and Iasiello. A wild pitch moved Wilson to third and Quigley to second, allowing a Zarick single to left to bring Wilson home. Boyadjis plated Quigley on a groundout to end the Arcadia scoring.

Gunia's first win of the season comes after  surrendering three runs (one earned) on 10 hits as she walked one and fanned three.

Iasiello and Quigley each went 3 for 4 at the plate, with the former driving in a pair and scoring a pair, and the latter scoring three times and recording two RBI.

Overall:
Quigley and Iasiello led the way scoring three runs each, while Boyadjis, Zarick and McMahon each drove in three.

The Knights recorded seven extra base hits on the day, with Hess hitting a pair of doubles.
