Softball Sweeps PSU Brandywine Game 1 8-0 Behind Combined No-Hitter, Game 2 5-2

GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Arcadia University softball team swept Penn State Brandywine Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action, taking game one 8-0 in six innings behind a combined no-hitter from freshman Kayla Resh and senior Erin Wilson, and game two 5-2. The Knights move to 17-15 on the season while the Nittany Lions fall to 12-14.
 
Game 1: Arcadia 8, PSU Brandywine 0 (6 innings)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Knights broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Resh singled up the middle to score classmate Jackie Bilotti. Most of Arcadia's damage came in a six-run fifth inning. Senior Sarah Gunia plated the first two runs of the frame on a single up the middle, bringing in senior Sara Boyadjis and sophomore Marissa Mancinelli. Two batters later, sophomore Nicole Iasiello plated Boyadjis with a single down the left field line. With the bases loaded, rookie Kristin Cancelliere sent a single up the middle allowing Iasiello and Gunia to score, on the same play Wilson made it from first to third before scoring on a throwing error by the shortstop. Wilson singled to the pitcher in the sixth to drive in the Knights' final run.
 
KNIGHTS AT THE PLATE: The Scarlet and Grey had nine hits in the game, each coming from a different player. Bilotti recorded the only extra base hit of the game, a double, while Gunia and Cancelliere each drove in a pair.
 
IN THE CIRCLE: Resh threw the first four innings of the combined no-hitter with a pair of strikeouts, moving to 3-5 on the season; Wilson fanned three over the final two innings for her first save of the season. Grace DeRosa suffered the loss allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits with three walks and a strikeout.
 
Game 2: Arcadia 5, PSU Brandywine 2
 
HOW IT HAPPENED: The visitors plated the first two runs of the contest in the top of the first when Steph Harvey singled up the middle to bring in Arianna Segich; Julia Allman scored the other run on a failed pickoff attempt at first base resulting in an error on the first baseman. The Scarlet and Grey got one back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single up the middle from Iasiello to plate Bilotti. Bilotti recorded a pair of RBI of her own in the second inning on a double to left center to bring home sophomores Kaylee Zarick and Tori Zaccaria. With a 3-2 lead in the fourth, Boyadjis singled down the right field line to plate the final two runs.
 
KNIGHTS AT THE PLATE: Bilotti led Arcadia's eight-hit game with a 3-4 performance with a double, two RBI and two runs scored; freshman Marissa Giberson also had a multi-hit game going 2-3.
 
NITTANY LIONS AT THE PLATE: The Nittany Lions recorded seven hits in the game, with two coming from each Allman, Harvey and Julie Foeldes.
 
IN THE CIRCLE: Gunia moved to 7-4 throwing five innings allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five; Bilotti picked up her first save allowing one hit and fanning four in two scoreless innings. Olivia Encarnacion took the loss allowing five runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out one.
 
UP NEXT: The Knights hit the road on Thursday to take on Rutgers-Camden in non-conference action starting at 3 p.m.
